Where is /var/log/dmesg

#1 Post by Jjueh3 »

Hi, so there is no /var/log/dmesg file in my Debian Stretch and I was unable to see any information about where this file now is in the relase notes of Debian Stretch.
Do they mention that kind of changes in any documentation of Debian?

I don't see the file here on the two Debian 9 systems I checked. But dmesg does work.

Just to clarify MALsPa's point: the dmesg command is distinct from any particular file.

If I am not mistaken, this is because the contents are now to be found in journalctl.

Why don't they list those changes on the release notes? is it too minor of a change to mention?

Was it there when you used Jessie? Prolly not, since Jessie also runs systemd, which has journalctl.

About the question in the title, you should seriously ask Lennart and co.

I checked the release notes and you are right, it is not mentioned there. Maybe because it is so minor. You can, of course, pipe the output of

Code: Select all

dmesg
or

Code: Select all

journalctl - k
to a file if you need that. Even do it automatically with a service or script

Just to clarify, Debian Jessie still has dmesg in /var/log
