[solved] problems logging out of a VT while X is running

#1 Post by badalisc »

Hello,

I just installed Debian 9.1 (amd64, default kernel) without desktop environment on my small laptop and subsequently installed the "xorg" and "fluxbox" packages.
Running "startx" right after the installation fails. Log:

[ 1017.020] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/home/joe/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
[ 1017.020] (EE)
[ 1017.048] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
Then I installed "xserver-xorg-video-intel" (package description says: "discouraged if your hw is new enough", but I didn't know what to try).
As a result, startx doesn't fail anymore and I have a working fluxbox, but there is another problem (not so easy to describe but I hope this gives a clue):

1) I login as joe on tty1
2) I run startx -> I'm in fluxbox
3) I press ctrl-alt-f2 -> I'm at tty2 login prompt
4) I login as joe on tty2
5) I logout ->
  • the fluxbox screen is displayed (instead of the tty2 login prompt)
  • mouse is dead
  • keyboard:
    • fluxbox hotkeys don't work
    • ctrl-alt-del reboot the system instead of exiting fluxbox
    • alt-f* and ctrl-alt-f* have no effect, except alt-f1 that gives me an entirely black screen
6) I press alt-f1 -> get a black screen
  • now the keyboard is completely dead, ctrl-alt-f* and ctrl-alt-del have no effect
7) I plug in or replug a usb keyboard -> the usb keyboard works
  • ctr-alt-f* can switch VT. tty1 stays black
  • ctr-alt-del on tty1 exits fluxbox getting rid of the black screen and back to the shell
User joe is a member of groups: joe, cdrom, floppy, audio, dip, video, plugdev, netdev, bluetooth.
If I skip step #5 (logout) everything works fine (I can switch to a working fluxbox with alt-f1).
If I login as root in step #1 the problem remains the same (also tried "xserver-xorg-legacy" + "needs_root_rights = yes").
If I login as root in step #4 there is no problem at logout (!) (I get the tty2 login prompt as expected and can switch to a working fluxbox with alt-f1).
If I login as a different user (not joe or root) in step #4 the problem remains the same.

The closest case I found on the web is this, but I'm not sure it's related (and no solution): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175562477/

I haven't created an xorg.conf nor made any other changes to the configuration, should I?
I haven't tried a display manager and I don't want one, I just want to run startx from the console.
The same laptop was running Slackware and fluxbox before, with no problems. I'm also new to systemd.

Any idea on how to proceed to diagnose the problem is very welcome!

Laptop model: asus eeepc 1215p, cpu: atom n570, video: intel gma 3150

Re: problems logging out of a VT while X is running in anoth

hm.

random thoughts:

try another windowmanager?
try installing & using a display/login manager?
try installing jessie (oldstable) instead on this old, old hardware?
try uninstalling intel drivers?
try nomodeset on grub linux command line?

Thank you for the reply and ideas!
try another windowmanager?
I just tried AfterStep, Enlightenment, IceWm, JWM, Metacity, Openbox, Sapphire and Window Maker, same result. Not a fluxbox issue I think.
try installing & using a display/login manager?
I tried xdm. It boots directly to a gui login prompt on vt7 which starts a working fluxbox. Vt 1 through 6 are still available for text login.
I can't reproduce the problem unless I use startx manually from the console!

Of course I would like to understand the cause, but I think I can do without startx if the problem never comes back with xdm, thanks!

The "failed to set mode: Permission denied" and "couldn't enable device *" logs, as well as the fact that logging out as root doesn't cause the problem, makes me think of a permission issue, but I have no idea how to find out.
try installing jessie (oldstable) instead on this old, old hardware?
I wanted stretch for a specific reason and that's why I replaced the existing Slackware installation.

Actually I considered buying new hardware but I found very limited choices of netbooks (<= 12" and low cost). They were much more common in 2011 when I got this one (pre installed Ubuntu).
Then I decided to just buy a new battery instead, so as to avoid unexpected issues with new hardware... :D
try uninstalling intel drivers?
I tried a few times, but I've never been able to start X without them installed (except in the case below).
try nomodeset on grub linux command line?
Tried. Both with and without intel driver.
X is successfully started in both cases, but the max. resolution is 1024x768.

The problem is nearly the same, except that in step #6, pressing alt-f1 just gives me a flicker instead of a black screen, and replugging the keyboard has no effect as well as ctrl-alt-del. My only option is the power button.

glad to hear it works with xdm.

about post #1 - we missed an important point - startx fails for 2 very different reasons in the 2 logs!
the first:

Code: Select all

[ 1017.020] (WW) glamor requires at least 128 instructions (64 reported)
[ 1017.020] (EE) modeset(0): Failed to initialize glamor at ScreenInit() time.
[ 1017.020] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 1017.020] (EE) AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
only the second is permissions related, and i'm guessing you messed something up while trying to fix things.
just undo that, you should be back to the first error.
it's up to you what the error messages mean, and if there's a fix.
suggested search terms: "debian stretch eeepc atom intel glamor gma 3150" or "modeset failed to initialize glamor" etc.

I think one of the changes in Debian 9 was that X no longer runs as root and now logind takes care of the credentials stuff and that x must be launched from the same virtual terminal as was used to log in, this requiring a driver that allows the kernel to do mode setting. I'm pretty sure that intel gma should work with either the x driver or intel.

here is also a bug that sounds exactly like what you have. there is a proposed solution to take out the clear screen option from bash conf file.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=805605

startx fails only in the first log.
In the second log, fluxbox is started and working. The permission related errors happen in the middle, when I logout from another vt and experience the "freeze" described. Even the termination is not abnormal because the fluxbox exit hotkey works after replugging the keyboard.

The only thing I did in between was to install "xserver-xorg-video-intel" ("xserver-xorg-video-all" recommends "xserver-xorg-video-intel" but I didn't take it at first). Even after a fresh Debian install I get similar logs.

As I mentioned in post #1, I tried installing "xserver-xorg-legacy" and setting "needs_root_rights = yes" to emulate the old behavior but no difference (conversely if I do the logout part as root everything works fine).
pylkko wrote:I'm pretty sure that intel gma should work with either the x driver or intel.
I've been unable to start X without the intel driver so far, even after a fresh install (except with nomodeset and "needs_root_rights = yes" at low resolution, see post #3).
I don't know if the "logout" problem is related to the intel driver, but now I have workarounds so it has become less urgent to make it work without.
But I'll do some search on the error message, as suggested by debiman.

That is certainly my problem, great find! The workaround works.

Thanks!

maybe mark as "solved" for posterity

(although technically only a "work around")
