Hello,
I am using Debian Jessie with the standard Gnome installation.
Once in a while, I am getting logged out of Gnome. My screen blanks and then I am redirected to the graphical login screen. I enter my password again and when I'm back again in Gnome all my applications have been closed. This happens are irregular intervals but seems to be happening more frequently.
I have done a apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.
I typically run the following applications: VS Code, Firefox, Gnome Terminal with ZSH and the Gnome file manager.
How can I go on finding out what is happening?

Getting logged out of Gnome
Re: Getting logged out of Gnome
I have the same issue with Stretch. Crash from gnome-shell to login screen (lightdm) happens more often lately.
My log shows
I found https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100769 where they say it's a nouveau Nvidia driver problem.
@bleakcabal do you use a Nvidia card?

VS Studio
omg, microsoft is going opensource now! with community & blog links...
still, i suspect it is an extremely heavyweight java blob; combined with nouveau it just might be responsible for bringing your system to its knees.
maybe you need to rethink your workflow?
remember, every Linux install is an IDE!
