I have an Asus EeePC 1015px which originally ran Ubuntu 16.04, but since hardware performance is limited and the wireless was never really reliable I decided to go for something newer and with a possibly lighter footprint.

At the moment I have Debian with XFCE installed. So far the system seems to work fine. I only have odd issues with my wireless. On at least 4 different systems (2 Debian, 1 Ubuntu 17.04 and 1 Windows 10) the same wlan access point gets recognized like all others and can be used reliably.

I don't understand what the issue could be. I attach some diagnostic outputs. Maybe the output triggers ideas for solving the problem in your heads:

The most common reason is lack of non-free firmware for your particular wireless hardware. Wifi problems are the most common posts on this forum. Do some searching here.

Ah - oh bugger, this is embarrassing! I just realised that wireless was disabled via the second function key. I didn't try to search for it before since I actually did see the network-list. After enabling the network I can connect to my own network also.

Sorry for bothering you without necessity. I must have hit the disabling key by accident when I tried to do something else ... probably in the dark. And unfortunately the netbook has no indication light or something similar.

Puh, I have to admit I made an other error. Yesterday I didn't do a thorough testing. When I switched on the netbook today I did end up with the same problem I had before. I don't know why yesterday it suddenly worked. Today I for sure can't connect to any wireless network again. This time I did test it with an open wireless which should work but I can't even connect to this network even if it does show up in the list. And again my own network doesn't even show up.

I'm connected to the network via ethernet at the moment.

I do however get the following unsatisfying output:

This seems odd to me. So far I never had a system where ifconfig wasn't available. Has this something to do with XFCE?

Presumably you have stretch installed. In Chapter 5, Issues to be aware of for stretch of the, Release Notes for Stretch, Section 5.3.9.

" The net-tools package is no longer part of new installations by default, ... '', and it goes on to explain more.

An other thing is by the way that the speaker sound doesn't work. I can use the headphones but unfortunately even alsactl restart doesn't restore the speaker sound.

Well, I did just mention it. You can as well ignore the additional problem. But it might be relevant to me in this case also since the second problem probably wouldn't appear in Xubuntu. Maybe I should give it a try after all. Even if this doesn't help during installation it might still be the case that later on Xubuntu would be capable of dealing with the wireless hardware of the Eee PC since this hardware was communicated as one officially supported by Ubuntu. I thought that accepting the proprietary sources in Debian for this device would end up loading the same configuration but maybe I'm wrong.
