[SOLVED] Chinese/Japanese Input Support
[SOLVED] Chinese/Japanese Input Support
Hi guys, I just installed Debian and added Japanese+Chinese into language under input assuming I would be able to type in those languages.
However, when I switch to those languages, it's just a normal english input, what do I go from here?

Since I feel certain that you at least attempted a Web search before posting your question, please identify which of these existing solutions you already tried, along with the results of each.

After all, there is no point in wasting time suggesting things you have already tried.

Re: Chinese/Japanese Input Support
Hi Dasein,
Let me just clarify a bit, I'm new to linux and I did do a google search but there are so many solutions out there for this one. I'm too scared to break my linux installation because I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't want to 'pick and choose' until I get something working (with possible side effects) which is why I posted here.
For those who do type in chinese or japanese, I was hoping someone knows a 'generally safe and accepted way' solution for this.
Hope that makes more sense.
Phil

Congrats on a clever new twist... gotta give you points for originality!user2635 wrote:I did do a google search but there are so many solutions out there for this one. I'm too scared to break my linux installation...
Of course, you could just as easily get a bad answer here as anywhere else...
So, the first lesson you need to learn is about making backups. Any time you successfully install a new distro, the very first thing you should do is make a backup. That way you don't need to worry about breaking anything.
Once you make that backup, you will be able to try any number of existing solutions without fear.
And if you're really all that new, maybe consider using a distro that is deliberately designed for newbies. Broadly speaking, Debian users tend to have some experience under their belts. Best available data say that 5 out of 6 Debian users started with a newb-friendly "starter" distro.
Re: Chinese/Japanese Input Support
Got it, I'll try that and see where I go.I went for the encrypted option when I installed debian, so I don't know how that will affect my backup (I'll figure it out somehow)
I'm more worried about the fact that there doesn't appear to be an easy agreed solution. A quick google of debian input methods gets me this (https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/intr ... ut.en.html) which is a massive technical guide that doesnt' help me.
Thanks for your help Dasein. In the meantime, if anyone else has other ideas, let me know.

Re: Chinese/Japanese Input Support
And yet you claim you're new to this. How very interesting.user2635 wrote:I went for the encrypted option when I installed debian...
And by some strange Cosmic Coincidence, you have a prepackaged comeback to everything that doesn't involve having someone retype an existing answer just for you.
So much for those originality points.
But hey, your time is valuable, so of course I'd be happy to do your searching for you.

Re: Chinese/Japanese Input Support
First,I can only help you input Chinese character,I no any Japanese language skills.user2635 wrote:I mean, generally switching languages by clicking the top right of the gnome taskbar? or by pressing super+space? How you "switch to those languages"?What is you did?
Here is what I get after running the command

This show a list about some package of fcitx.
If you still can't understand ,try read output of following command :
Code: Select all
apt show fcitx ibus
AFAIK,you should try install fcitx-pinyin for input Chinese character
Code: Select all
sudo apt install fcitx-pinyin

Thank you! It works now!谢谢你,终于可以打中文了!
Now I understand that the keyboard layout part has got nothing to do with keyboard input (see horrible quality pic: https://framapic.org/rkUTRlWX8F5p/MygPhIW1uIeZ.png)
You cannot add an actual language input method through there, thanks!!
I'll try to find a way to solve the Japanese part myself and leave this post open in case anyone knows how.
