Too late at night for me to —yawn—look at it now but tomorrow'll be another day.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Hi Guys, @OP: Go to this thread, read a little and then follow the advice/commands given by "Bulkley": http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=130558 the way I see it maybe this is related to your problem, a little while ago on a fresh debian stretch install I could not install anything using apt-get or synaptic, then I followed Bulkley's advice and was able to update repositories and install updates and packages, maybe you should try it just in case, good luck!
Debian 12 Gnome on a MSI H61M-P25 (B3) PC & on a Dell Latitude E6410 & HP EliteBook 8540p Laptops.
LMDE 6 on a Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 Laptop.
Bodhi Linux 7 on a HP Compaq DC5750 Small Form Factor PC.
Windows 11 on a Intel DH55TC PC.

I just tried to go to http://deb.debian.org/debian in browser and got 404 Not Found error. However when I checked my own sources.list it has a trailing slash after the url, and this works. Try modifying your sources to add this eg:

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
not sure if a server glitch or the wiki is wrong.

Those who have lost data
...and those who have not lost data YET ”

Looks like you're having a hard time with this.

dasein wrote:Good idea. Debian isn't newbie-friendly and doesn't try to be.
Debian will never just facilitate out-of-the-box enabling of proprietary, binary-only drivers, which are kept at arm's length. Debian has a reputation for security and stability to keep up; it is used primarily for running secure servers so conscientious systems administrators think not twice but several times before installing non-free software, even from Debian's own non-free repository, because of security concerns. There's no way non-free source code can be audited by Debian in the event of vulnerabilities, which is a vulnerability in and of itself. Finally, where remote servers are administered from a local machine, non-free software is best avoided for similar reasons, even on a desktop system. Installing proprietary drivers isn't difficult for more experienced users but it's not so easy to help when questions are left unanswered or suggestions aren't tried.

Debian can indeed be uninstalled by installing Ubuntu; it's up to the user.

I was just now checking this out, was going to edit the wiki,
but could not get the url you show to work either, so then I tried the
urls I had, on the server, the last time I installed anything and did security updates
my sources.list worked fine, the urls were fine, none of them work now,....
so I don't know what the deal is. Certainly can not, and will not edit the wiki,
if I do not know what the correct urls should be. I did send a note to the mailing list,
maybe somebody will know how to edit correctly, or if it some thing else.

Thanks, I did see it, I had not noticed the new thread, when I posted here,
probably because I had not gotten that far in my "unread" posts list.
When I saw this, I stopped where I was, and started looking at wiki, etc.
And finally ended up sending a e-mail to the mail list, so hope fully some
one takes a look, and maybe edits or adds some sort of explanation.

If not , later today I will add a comment, pointing to the thread you started,
that way if any do have problems with using the example, they can refer to
the thread, and try using the :
sunrat wrote: However when I checked my own default sources.list (in sid) it has a trailing slash after the url, and this works. Try modifying your sources to add this eg:
I have run into the 404 Not Found error, when looking at them with a browser before
in the past, but the same as other have mentioned, when installing a package, they worked fine.
It could be confusing to some one new, so in any event I think some additional explanation is warranted.
Thanks
