Cinnamon appearance issue

#1 Post by krans »

Hello.
I'm running Debian testing with Cinnamon. And it's my favourite ever!
But yesterday, after doing my upgrades, Cinnamon is not what it used to be:
Wallpaper is gone.
All theming is gone, icons and colours. All windows seem to have the appearence of some stock XFCE or very simple Gnome.
My shortcuts are not working, or rather 2/3 of them are not working. Some still do (which I find even stranger).
My power management won't even open.
Finally, and this is where I think the clue is, when trying to connect to my external monitor or change resolution or any screen settings, I get the message:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.cinnamon.SettingsDaemon was not provided by any .service files
Does anyone recognize this or know what's happened?
And would anyone know how to fix it?

Testing is fun.
Test away.
Post your findings.
Submit bug reports.

You have 3 choices:

- Continue with Testing, wait until the next upgrade fixes the problem.
- Reinstall using Stable image and don't upgrade to Testing ever.
- Upgrade to Sid (unstable) to see if the fix is already there, but hasn't entered Testing yet. This would be even more fun for you.

JK, convert to Stable right away.

I have nothing useful to contribute here, just adding a big +1. Same issues here. As a partial workaround, Ctrl+Alt+Esc still works to restart Cinnamon, and after booting I use that to at least get my wallpaper back (and to get my conky setup back to normal).

Can you look in your apt history log to see what update(s) might have triggered this?

It happened for me with this update: https://pastebin.com/duxeSFJA

Unfortunately, it's huge and no cinnamon packages are listed. But I'm quite sure this is the update that hosed it. Maybe it's related to gnome-session instead?

Update of 08 September 2017 has solved the issues with corrupted wallpapers, keyboard shortcuts, theming, power management, etc. Woot.
