For users running GNOME, do you run any extensions from extensions.gnome.org? What are the upsides and downsides of said extensions, do they impact GNOME's stability in any way? Is it better to run vanilla?
Thank you guys.

GNOME extensions question
Re: GNOME extensions question
I'm not sure what you mean by 'better'. Do you mean stability-wise?
I use a few extensions, about 4-5. I think stability really depends on the extension, and some will conflict while some won't, but I have no stability issues.
Really it's best just to try some out.

Re: GNOME extensions question
Run Hide Legacy Tray, Hide Top Bar, No Topleft Corner and Workspaces To Dock from Gnome.org as they are not in repos AFAIK. Run Caffeine and Dash To Dock from Debian repos. Of all of these, Workspaces To Dock has greatest upside as a more elegant approach to overview / navigation imho than either vanilla or Gnome2 desktops such as Cinnamon or Mate, for where more than about six different windows are being used at once. Downside not obvious with quad core CPU / ssd drive / >4GB RAM for six extensions running a few common apps (web browser, file browser, word processor, audio player, image viewer ..).
Stability at running Gnome3 is mostly why i use Debian over a number of other popular distros. Jessie, Stretch and Buster work with all above extensions.

Re: GNOME extensions question
Notice that some of the more common extensions are available from Debian's own repository
Re: GNOME extensions question
pylkko, thank you, didn't see that. That means it should be well-tested?
I'm mostly thinking about dash-to-dock. It looks very interesting.
Kind regards.

Re: GNOME extensions question
was curious what this was and checked it out; the sleeping while i had programs running was one of my biggest annoyances; i disabled sleeping altogether - i can now revert those settingsZjho wrote:Run Caffeine
the extensions are what kept me on gnome when i was trying out other desktop environments.
i use:
Activities Configurator
Dash to Panel
Notifications Alert
Openweather
Top Icons Plus
User Themes
Caffeine doesn't show under extensions on the tweak tool; is it a program like Gimp or an 'extension'?
Re: GNOME extensions question
Hi fmp, delighted to see another Debian Gnome user posting.
Caffeine is in Tweak Tool extension list here, perhaps a reboot is needed for it to show ?
Hope we'll see more people posting their extension setups for the record.

Re: GNOME extensions question
Weirdly, it does not:
I can access it if i go to activities -> search caffeine, though
