Why does my shutdown screen look so terrible? [SOLVED]

#1 Post by tedrogers »

Hi,

Just a cosmetic annoyance really, but why does my shutdown screen look like this, all tabbed out awkwardly?

Is there a way to make it more pretty?

Thanks.

Install plymouth?
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Hmmm...mine does that in MX Linux when I use the option to boot with systemd, but not with sysvinit.

So now's there's one more thing that systemd's creeping evil has corrupted beyond redemption!

um.
it doesn't do that on my install with systemd.

to approach the subject somewhat more objectively, it has something to do with your terminal "being messed up".
that's vague.
i can't come up with the proper wording to find something suitable to help you right now.
this:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=linux+tty+mes ... g+shutdown
doesn't really touch on your problem, but might provide information.

I hear where you're coming from, a cosmetic fix for a cosmetic issue might be just the ticket.

I've seen it on this machine (Lenovo T500) on some Tux OS's, but not on others. I can't explain it.

The only time I've seen this happen to me is when there have been conflicts between GNOME extentions.

Think about what you most recently installed, if you have done, and remove it.

Strange thing is it's been like that from the start on a clean xfce4 Debian install. I've subsequently accidentally added a load of gnome stuff, and removed it again, and the problem persists. How can I check to remove any lingering gnome extensions?

Well blow me down...installed plymouth + themes, and ran the following to install the 'details' theme:

Code: Select all

plymouth-set-default-theme -R details
...totally fixed the issue.

Mega!

Thanks.

Glad to hear it; I've always used Plymouth for desktop set-ups.
