problem and it is (strange!) related to the kernel version and java libreoffice extensions:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=865866

Anyway i have not downgraded the kernel as they suggest but just removed
two java libreoffice-writer extensions that apparently cause the problem and that i
have never used or seen before (they are installed by default as example of extensions):

apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-wiki-publisher
apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-nlpsolver

After this libreoffice-writer is now running fine and for
me the problem is solved
Thank You for this! Did the trick for me!

Thank you very much, but only need this one line:

Code: Select all

apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-wiki-publisher
Not need the second line for me:

Code: Select all

apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-nlpsolver
My problem is solved.

I had same problem.
I removed the following packages.

Code: Select all

apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk2
apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk2
libreoffice writer is now launching.

Special Note:

Instead of removing this package, try disabling Java Runtime Environment.

Steps to disable Java in libreoffice.

1. Launch libreoffice
2. Tools -> Options -> Advanced
3. Uncheck "Use a Java runtime environment"

I got lowriter (libreoffice-writer) to launch.

Can u explain how you concluded that libreoffice-gtk2 needs to be removed?

No I can not. I found the steps in another forum for Ubuntu. I am curious about it too.

This might be a clue thou.

I got this from running aptitude show libreoffice-gtk2

It's admirable to file a bug report but you should check if one has already been filed. There are now at least five for this bug starting from June 20.
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=865303

There is also a workaround suggested that doesn't require removing packages https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... 865303#230 -
I've been discussing this regression with upstream develo[pers. It's
now understood and we have several possible fixes but we have not yet
settled on the best one.

You should also be able to work around it by temporarily disabling the
Stack Clash fix using the kernel parameter stack_guard_gap=1

Those who have lost data
...and those who have not lost data YET ”

I've had the same problem. To fix it, go into another LibreOffice app (eg LibreOffice Calc). Click on Tools -> Options -> Advanced. Deselect "Use a java runtime enviroment".

I'm a newbie and I learnt an easy workround for this problem. Open Libre Office in the terminal with: libreoffice --global. Works every time.
