Problem with Wifi Hard Blocked Rf-kill

#1 Post by msnjuegos »

Hi!
I have problems with my wifi, this don't can be switch on in Debian, but I can activate it in Windows. In the terminal I have written the following lines:

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wlo1 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
and when I try to unblock:

Code: Select all

 $ sudo rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes
$ sudo rfkill unblock all
nothing happens and the wifi continues turn off.
I have found others solutions in google that I have tried but without results:
  • 1) Turn on the wifi with key combination (In my notebook Fn + F12)
  • 2) Turn on the wifi from BIOS/UEFI
  • 3) Turn on the wifi in Windows and reboot
  • 4) Remove rfkill status

    Code: Select all

    #rm /dev/rfkill
    #reboot
  • 5) Restart BIOS/UEFI to defaults settings
Some information about my notebook:

Code: Select all

$ uname -a
Linux debian 4.9.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.30-2+deb9u3 (2017-08-06) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hardblocked cannot be changed by software
in this case, the op had to blacklist a kernel module.
i doubt it's going to be the same as yours, but it's a started for further investigation.

ps: use 'lspci -k'
or look at this.

Thanks for you reply. I edited the post to add the other information requested.
And about blacklist the kernel module, what driver do you recommend me to blacklist? rt2800pci or someother?

Try blacklisting the hp-wmi module.

You could also try:

Code: Select all

# modprobe -rv hp-wmi
# rfkill unblock all
# modprobe -v hp-wmi
That may toggle the connection back on and obviate the need for a blacklist.

I tried to blacklist the module hp_wmi but I don't have results:

First I put in command line:

Code: Select all

$ sudo modprobe -rv hp-wmi
rmmod hp_wmi
rmmod wmi
rmmod sparse_keymap
$ sudo rfkill unblock all
$ sudo modprobe -v hp-wmi
insmod /lib/modules/4.9.0-3-amd64/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/wmi.ko
insmod /lib/modules/4.9.0-3-amd64/kernel/drivers/input/sparse-keymap.ko
insmod /lib/modules/4.9.0-3-amd64/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/hp-wmi.ko
But the wifi cannot turn on by the combination keys (fn+f12) yet. Then I reboot and nothing happens

After that I add the line

Code: Select all

blacklist hp_wmi
to

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and reboot and nothing happens.

^ Then try the firmware ("BIOS") solutions mentioned in @debiman's linked thread.

On some laptops I have owned there was a setting in the BIOS/UEFI that could change the behaviour of the Fn key and i do recall having to change the setting to get something to work properly (might have been the wifi or sound, I don't recall exactly) it might be worth checking if your machine has such a setting and see if changing it makes a difference.

Yes, in BIOs there is a option to enable or disable the multimedia keys behaivor and I have enabled and disabled this feature, so the problem doesn't the combination keys I think.

Hi @debiman, I made a document:

Code: Select all

$ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
with this lines:

Code: Select all

options rfkill master_switch_mode=2
options rfkill default_state=1
Nothing happens :/ (I already rebooted the system). Do you know if exists other way to change this parameters?
Moreover, I actually have this this lines in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

Code: Select all

blacklist wmi
blacklist hp_wmi
and this lines in /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf:

Code: Select all

#options rt2800pci 11n_disable=1
options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1

try only the second line.
better yet, try only this added to your grub kernel command: rfkill.default_state=1

Hi, I added to grub kernel cmd the line : rfkill.default_state=1, next to "quiet splash" in grub options (editing the file /etc/default/grub and update-grub) and nothing happens yet after reboot :?.

I was seeing the parameters of rfkill with modinfo, and it appears:

Code: Select all

$ sudo modinfo rfkill

license:        GPL
description:    RF switch support

author:         Ivo van Doorn <IvDoorn@gmail.com>
depends:
intree:         Y
vermagic:       4.9.0-3-amd64 SMP mod_unload modversions
parm: master_switch_mode:SW_RFKILL_ALL ON should: 0=do nothing (only unlock); 1=restore; 2=unblock all (uint)
parm: default_state:Default initial state for all radio types, 0 = radio off (uint)
Why not appears the option '1' in parm default_state, something like '1 = radio on (uint)'?

Windows shuts down and disables WiFi. Ain't that great. Another reason not to buy anything with Windows preinstalled.

I would boot Windows, make sure WiFi works and pull the battery. This won't give Windows the chance to disable it at shutdown. :twisted:

Since the blacklisting didn't help, I suggest you remove it to let the drivers load again. Do the other hotkeys (e.g. Volume Up/Down key combination, or screen brightness etc.) work while the hp-wmi driver is blacklisted?

About the wifi - I remember having seen a setting in some old HP-Pavillion models whereby it disables the wifi when an ethernet connection is detected, though it could be turned off. Did you try the wifi while ethernet was disconnected? If not, please disconnect the ethernet cable > reboot > check wifi and retry toggling wifi switch (key combination) if needed.

Run "rfkill list all" and post its output if it is still disabled.
Also post the output of 'modinfo hp-wmi'.
