Removing of Firefox breaks Gnome

#1 Post by mrkapqa »

Hello ,

today is uninstalled Firefox-esr, because it upgraded from 31 (iceweasel) to 52 and some functionality got broke.

So i removed firefox-esr, but this also removed gnome-desktop and gnome-core ,

now i have to remove a lot of packages and then reinstall those i suppose.

Is there a way to cirumwent this ?

Why is that so?

Thanks

Just mark the packages you want to keep as manual installed before you remove a package:

Code: Select all

apt-mark manual gnome gnome-core
The other packages were removed due to dependencies.
Have a nice day!

ok, but it always asks for "the following packages are no longer needed..." and then comes a long list ...

do i need to remove those also or is it possible to "enter" the command above " apt-mark manual gnome gnome-core" also after having removed firefox-esr, which supposedly should break all the above packages ...

Since you are using Gnome, you can also use the software centre which will uninstall software for you without the kind of problems mentioned by you here.

it is a little unclear (at least to me) where exactly you are atm.

my suggestions:
1. make sure gnome desktop is installed manually, as was previously suggested.
2. then just do the cleanup.

seems like you've been hovering your index finger over the 'Y' key for days now, no?

Great post of confuseling stevepusser links to.
Just spent a while making notes on it, should have done the likes years ago.
However if any Gnome extensions are ever wanted that are not already in Debian repo, i don't think it will be easy getting them from Gnome.org without using Firefox. The only reason i keep it installed.

Uhm, I almsot 100% sure there is a similar extension for Chromium. And, besides, you can download them and install them manually from the tweak tool.
