[CLOSED] Xchat being dropped?

#1 Post by qyron »

I was trying to install xchat today when the apt prompt returned that the package can not be installed. At first, it was listed there were packages on hold preventing the installation but after an update, the command line returned there was a problem regarding libperl5.20. However, the currently installed version is libperl5.24.

Is this a bug, a kwirk or is xchat being dropped?

Well not knowing what version of Debian, or anything, I just tried a
"blind" search :
is xchat available in the Debian repositories ?
One hit :
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/net/xchat
Shows it is available for Debian 8 Jessie, but not Stretch (Debian 9) except
in the https://packages.debian.org/stretch-backports/xchat
And
https://packages.debian.org/stretch-backports/xchat
includes the dependency :

Code: Select all

dep: libperl5.24 (>= 5.24.0)
    shared Perl library
But we don't know what version of Debian you are using, etc,... any way,
maybe that will help you get started, and you can do your own searches , for more details ?
According to this hit : https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... an-stretch

Since XChat has not received software updates since 2013 (https://sourceforge.net/p/xchat/svn/HEAD/tree/)

I ended up using the hexchat package.
and
Neither xchat nor xchat-gnome is in the stretch repository since it became stable. But switching to hexchat is quite easy since the config files didn't change much. Just copy the lines you need from .xchat2/servlist.conf to .config/hexchat/servlist.conf (using meld for example). If you configured something else, check the other files as well. When you copy the history from the scrollback directory, watch out for changed names (e.g. FreeNode was renamed to freenode).

Apparently it is not really available, but there are alternatives.

90+% of times, most users will be running the latest version of an OS. Assume that. Nine times out of ten, you will be right. I'm running Debian 9.

I tend to shy away from Backports. Things can prove to become messy when doing it. Then I browsed the Debian Packages web front and read all that same information.

Already addressed this.

Seems like I've already make all the reading I needed to clarify my question but I was stunned to read someone putting down an application because it reached maturity and ceased (an hiatus, perhaps?) development. If it works, use it 'till it breaks.

Xchat seems to be on the comeback for next generation Debian, so... it appears as it only got a timeout. I can do without it for the time being.
