Hey,
I bought an i7 with a Radeon HD 6850 second-hand some years ago. First I ran Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, flawless. But since I'm a Gamer, I installed the Win7 Pro that was included.
By the years, Win7 became fat, ugly and lazy, just like me. Time for a change.
So my choice fell on Debian 9, which I ran on a Laptop successfully before.
I *knew* that Radeon cards are not too easy to tame, but this here? I did the usual contrib non-free amend to /etc/apt/source.list, updated and installed the firmware.
It works! I get the native resolution, the Debian-Wallpaper and that's it! No Login-Dialog anymore. This happens with both firmware-amd-graphics and firmware-non-free (or so,
you know what I mean.) Yeah, 3rd party drivers, haven't tried them yet. But since I can only use the command line now, it makes bughunting a bit tricky... :p
Any clue?

Debian 9.1 and Radeon
Re: Debian 9.1 and Radeon
I didn't really understand much of your post. I don't know what the "debian wallpaper" is.
Also not sure what you meant by "login dialog". If you have a command line, you must be logged in, no?
But anyway, for the Radeon HD video card, I believe the following package may be needed for the Linux GUI (xorg) environment:

that's good news.C64Nerd wrote:It works! I get the native resolution, the Debian-Wallpaper and that's it!
i assume that your problems are not _primarily_ hardware driver related then.
i find it more likely that debian's gnome desktop balks at your old-ish hardware.
have you tried using something else? XFCE? LXDE? Homebrew?
Re: Debian 9.1 and Radeon
Thanks for the answers and sorry for the late reply.
I built the XFCE desktop but did a re-install and tried Cinnamon.
Nope. Same thing.
firmware-amd-graphics is installed, the xserver too. The problem seems
to be the former. If I enter recovery mode and remove the amd driver
and firmware-linux-nonfree, it tells me on a reboot that R600+ cards
*require* firmware-amd-graphics.
*sigh*
@tynman: Sorry, not a native-speaker. I meant the fancy picture showing
the Debian-logo. And the dialog simply is the login-menu which does not
appear once I install the firmware-amd-graphics.

Re: Debian 9.1 and Radeon
please go back to this situation, then try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 - does that bring you to a non-graphical login?C64Nerd wrote:It works! I get the native resolution, the Debian-Wallpaper and that's it!
if so, please login, enter the following commands:
Code: Select all
lspci -k
uname -rv
ls -al /var/log/Xorg.0.log
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
