TP-LINK TL-WN772N not working on Debian 9

#1 Post by shaka »

Hi! I'm new to this forum and Debian at all. I want to learn the hard way how linux/unix-like systems are working. So for training purposes I reanimated my old pc: 32bit Asus M578L-M LX3, AMD Athlon II, 4 GB RAM and GeForce GT7500. I downloaded netinstall 9.2.1 iso and launched it. During installation I had my pc plugged in to internet via cable. No errors, everything went well. After rebooting I started searching for info how to install firmware drivers for TP-LINK TL-WN722N V2.0.
On Debian wiki I found "https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc" and do all the steps, reboot and nothing. My TP-LINK doesn't work, but when I installed non-free 9.2.0 iso I didn't need to install it, 'coz it worked out of the box. So I returned to pure netinstall iso.

After typing lsusb i got this:

Code: Select all

root@5H4k4:/home/shaka# lsusb

and after dmesg:

Thanks. It's working like a charm ;) I wonder why TP-LINK needs realtek drivers? Is it depends on architecture?

It depends on the Chipset inside your product, you can think of it like this.
Take a car for example, not a all the parts are made by the manufacturer, you can find a lot from other companies, like Japanese technology, engine, ECU... etc

am so funny.

Wikidevi is a good resource: TP-LINK_TL-WN722N_v2.

The following entry on the page is critical to getting the right firmware:
TP-LINK TL-WN722N Atheros
TP-LINK TL-WN722N v2 Realtek

That's firmware, not drivers.
Good to see it's working in Debian now. I had to build a driver from Github to get a V4 working a while ago.

it's more of a common term for windows users to understand that they need it and obviously to not think that it's a virus.

As this thread is old, installing 'firmware-realtek' package with apt install on debian 10 solved a similar issue to me
