So lets get back on topic, shall we? (Thanks).

So to get back on topic: I gather that the problem is a malformed line in the code. Couldn't this be fixed with a simple edit of the sources.list file? Rather than beat my head against a wall, perhaps I should give up and install Chromium. One would think that the maintainers of the repository should have fixed this by now.
Surely I'm not the only person who wants to install Google's Chrome browser in Debian Stretch :?

The normal way to install Chrome is to download the .deb from Google's download page and install it with dpkg -i or gdebi. The installation creates a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list with the correct repo. We are all wondering how you managed to get the incorrect entry in the wrong sources file.

First, I agree to the TOS, and then download the 64-bit DEB package from HERE:
https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/d ... index.html.
Once the download is completed, the Debian Software Installer initiates the install, the pops up this cryptic message (screenshot):

NO error message.
Once I click "OK" to close the dialog button, the Debian Software Installer loads (displays)

please perform

Code: Select all

apt-get install -f
after that, update & upgrade your system.
make note of the output and post it here if you encounter problems.

then check if the googlechrome is compatible with your debian version.

if all checks out, retry the install.

This is my result:

Code: Select all

(Side note: I have to leave to do my volunteering, so I shall take this up later tonight or tomorrow).

You must still remove line #19 from your /etc/apt/sources.list file. It is incorrect and causing the error, as has been clearly stated several times already. You can use Synaptic if installed to manage your repositories from a GUI.

It is possible to disable a line by commenting it out, but since you are going to have a working line in another file, remove it altogether.

What Steve said above ^, it's the reason for your apt-get error.
Fix that first (as I said, we're still wondering where that line came from).
dpkg will not install dependencies, so to use that you need to install dependencies first ie. libappindicator1
gdebi should install dependencies, God knows why it didn't work.

Gdebi will install dependencies, so obviously whatever this "Debian software installer" really is, it's stupid if it's just using "dpkg -i". The lack of any terminal or other helpful error message makes me think it's some GNOME thing.

You can now also use apt on the command line to install local deb files and pull in dependencies; its advantage over gdebi is that you can use it to install multiple debs in one go that can depend on one another. Its disadvantage is a trickier syntax.

It seems that GNOME software sets up as the default app for standalone debs, but it currently can't install them. Doesn't appear anyone is going to fix the bug in Debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=851856

Ubuntu also shipped a bugged version of that with some recent releases, but they have more interest in fixing it.

I forgot to mention that I am not skilled using the nano editor.

The line has now been removed ans /etc/apt/sources.list now reads:

Code: Select all

#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 201$

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 2017$

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib

# stretch-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
# A network mirror was not selected during install. The following entries
# are provided as examples, but you should amend them as appropriate
# for your mirror of choice.
#
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-backports main contrib non-free
Even after correcting the sources.list file, there is still a dependency problem.
I don't know which package I need to install to resolve this.

Code: Select all

elton@debian:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
[sudo] password for elton:

SUCCESS!!!

In the future, you can just install gdebi and use it on the command line, or its gdebi-gtk GUI, since it will automatically install missing dependencies if available, or refuse to install them if it's an incompatible package. Dpkg will happily half-install incompatible packages and then you'll have a semi-broken system--this has led to innumerable posts here.

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

interestingly, the exact same command has been used twice - first time it errored, 2nd time it worked.

I noticed that. There is some crucial information missing here, such as OP installed the missing dependency before the second try, as advised.

Rube Goldberg would be proud of you!

The easiest way is :
- download from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/
- change to your Downloads directory and install with

Code: Select all

apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
Use tab completion so you don't have to type the full name.
This will add the key, install dependencies, add the repo for automatic updates and install all in one command. 8)

SOLVED: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch

#40 Post by elton-w »

Apologies to all for the belated response. Subject now (correctly) marked as SOLVED.
Chrome has been installed, as I corrected the malformed line in the install script.
Also as a newbie to the Debian Forums, I had not enabled notifications, which is not enabled by default.
Everything is now OK, and I shall continue my interest and education in Debian Linux. 8)
