install the latest Thunderbird

#1 Post by smily01 »

Hello,

I’ve got a question. Since a couple of weeks I use Debian Stretch.I use Thunderbird as an e-mail client, but I want to install version 52.4.0. As Thunderbird is not part anymore of the backports anymore I want to install it on another way. I installed Firefox 57.0 via the following way:

Instructions

Download latest Firefox tar-ball

First, download a latest Firefox version. The below command will always fetch the latest binaries:

$ wget -O FirefoxSetup.tar.bz2 "https://download.mozilla.org/?product=f ... lang=en-US"

Extract new Firefox tarball

# mkdir /opt/firefox

# tar xjf FirefoxSetup.tar.bz2 -C /opt/firefox/

Replace existing binary

Make a backup of the original Firefox binary shipped with Debian and create a new symbolic link pointing to downloaded Firefox executable:

# mv /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr_orig

# ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox/firefox /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr

Do you know how can I replace the existing binary of Thunderbird?

I thank your for your answer!

Thunderbird is version 52.4.0 in Debian's main repository.

You hopefully backed up your Firefox profile before running Firefox 57. Backwards compatibility with the ESR version was removed with (as I recall) version 55. If you do need to go back to the ESR version, it is possible but you are likely to lose some things.
