Hello and thank you for the help.
After a fresh install of Debian 9.1 Stretch, on shutdown my Lenovo T500 Laptop is going into an infinite loop (hanging).
This problem does NOT happen with Debian 8.9 Jessie.
I'm using:
Debian 9.1 Stretch
Lenovo T500 Laptop
My laptop goes into an infinite loop on shutdown with the following messages:
[ xxx.xxxxxx] i2400m_usb 5-1:1.0: device not connected as high speed
[ xxx.xxxxxx] irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

[ xxx.xxxxxx] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
<repeats the last 3 lines every 120 seconds>
To isolate the problem (hardware or software), I installed and tested a bare-bones (CLI only) version of Debian 9.1 Stretch. The problem remained.
Next, I installed and tested a bare-bones (CLI only) version of the older Debian 8.9 Jessie. The problem did *NOT* occur.
So the problem is due to something in the newer Debian 9.1 Stretch (not due to failing hardware).
I tried replacing "systemd" with "sysvinit" in Debian 9.1 Stretch (see: without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Debian_Stretch). The problem remained.
I tried adding the grub options suggested in the shutdown comments:
irqpoll all_generic_ide
These grub options removed all of messages EXCEPT for the first one:
[ xxx.xxxxxx] i2400m_usb 5-1:1.0: device not connected as high speed
and the computer still hung on shutdown.
I tried adding the "echo" string suggested in the shutdown comments:
sudo echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs
The computer still hung on shutdown.
To test if there was a power control bug, I tried shutting down with "halt -p", but it also failed to fix the problem.
To see if there was a clue elsewhere, I checked for bootup errors. There were none.
The first line of the shutdown messages is:
[ xxx.xxxxxx] i2400m_usb 5-1:1.0: device not connected as high speed
So I checked for bootup messages related to "i2400m_usb".
I found one:
[ xxx.xxxxxx] i2400m_usb 8-3:1.0: WIMAX interface wmx0 (xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) ready
This message indicates that "i2400m_usb" is loading without error.
I tried changing the BIOS SATA setting from "AHCI" to "Compatibility". The problem remained.
Summary:
The problem is in the bare-bones of Debian 9.1. (Debian 8.9 works. Debian 9.1 fails.)
It is not due to hardware (Debian 8.9 works).
It's not a power-off problem (not fixed with "halt -p").
The Intel wireless drivers are loading ("i2400m_usb").
There are no other message indicating driver problems.
The BIOS works for Debian 8.9.
I'm running out of ideas.
I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to fix this shutdown problem.
Thank you for the help.

Hello,
Nine days ago, I posted this request for help. I haven't received any response. So I'm assuming that I posted in the wrong place.
I would appreciate pointers to any forums that might help resolve my installation problems.

Re: Debian Stretch shutdown probem on Lenovo T500
It seems I have a similar problem after update to stretch.
My Panasonic CF-S8 was booting and shutting down fine on prior Jessie version.
It is now booting with following error message and simply freezes during shutdown.
Should I touch the grub options ... any recommendations ?
Thank you

that's debatable.fredintorkyo wrote:It seems I have a similar problem
look at
Code: Select all
journalctl
also to op:

incredible the lengths you went to to fix/troubleshoot, when journalctl should be the first step.

Hi.
Here are few things that you can try:
Did you try to disable ACPI (add acpi=off in grub command line) ?
Are all the firmwares installed ?
Disable power management for your hard-drive (use hdparm).
