Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
Hi! I've finally installed (after many problems) debina 9 gnome. It crashes all the time though. 10 minutes ago I wanted to use it. In 5 minutes I had to restart my computer 2 times.
I tried to install cinammone, there were no problmes, but other then gnome looks just awful for me (I thought about kali, but it's too advanced for me I guess. I just want to programm and make server, aaaand maybe learn pentesting a bit, but first of all need to learn linux more).
How does crash look? Just a crash. I can do nothing (I can still see the desktop). Video stops, music stops, mouse - sometimes I can move it, sometime I cannot, either way I have to restart my computer.
CPU - i5 7600k OC 4,9 1,250V (maybe that's the problem, but windows works very well).
GPU - GTX 650Ti
Mother - tomahawk z270
RAM - 2x8GB 3000MHz CL15 corsair
SSD - adata 240GB
HDD - toshiba p300 1TB

Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
The best way to learn about Linux, and anything else for that matter,---- snip---but first of all need to learn linux more).
Read, read the documentation, read the other posts on the forum, there are 100s , with similar problems, especially related to Gnome, read documentation
on the history of Linux, read about how things worked well on some of the older versions, but mysteriously, now a days on the newest versions many people seem to have lot's of problems, but the biggest part of the problem is, now a days , wanna be hacker/cracker supeusers, jump in, with out reading or studying any documentation, or starting with the basics.
They just jump in and figure since they "wanna be", they can start using the newest most advanced and also most complex systems and DE's, .... it takes time.
Read about the history, and changes that Linux has gone through, start out
with a simple version of Linux, just a base system, no DE, at first,... learn how to install Xorg and a WindowManager, I would bet $1000 , if you were using a
Debian 9 base, without Gnome or any DE, it does not crash all the time.
Also learn how to type/spell accurately, it is important when typing code,I just want to programm and make server,
any typo, misspelled/incorrect syntax , etc. will cause the code to fail, and not compile correctly, or even if it does compile , the program won't run as excepted, all to often the problem is 1 little typo.
Servers do not usually use a DE , (Desktop Environment), so why do you think
you need Gnome ? You will be better off learning how to use the command line, so when you set-up your server you can do the tasks needed, from the command line. Last but not least, learn how to use the search engines to find
the basic information you need to start learning about Linux, if that is what you want to learn about.
You do not need a desktop environment (DE) to write a program, neither Gnome nor Cinnamon are necessary. I wrote my first program from a FreeDos prompt, useing qbasic, but that is a whole other topic,... the point is, Gnome or some
other Fancy DE is not needed.
When the founder of Debian, for example, wrote the first code for Debian, no DE's existed yet, Gnome had not even been thought of yet,... and he wrote /programmed a entire operating system.
Linus, started creating Linux, using Minixas his learning OS, again no DE, nor Gnome had even been thought of yet.
Learn how to crawl before, trying to walk. So any way, this got much longer then I intended, I think it is great that you want to try to learn about Linux, and programming , there is plenty of good documentation available, the most important first step, learn how to effectively use the search engines to findfrom:https://www.wired.com/2012/11/linus-torvalds-isoc/In the summer of 1991, Linus Torvalds was a University of Helsinki student living with his mom. Months earlier, he'd bought a $3,500 generic gray block of a computer. It was a 33-megahertz Intel system with 4 megabytes of RAM. And after Torvalds had installed the 16 floppy disks that comprised the Minix operating system – an early version of Unix for Intel machines – onto this computer, the young hacker was certain that there was room for improvement.
He started poking around, reading obscure Unix documentation manuals, writing little pieces of software that gave Minix a boost. Then, on Aug. 25, he posted a now-legendary note to the internet's Minix newsgroup: "Hello everybody out there using minix – I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones," he wrote "I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat."
it. Or go to a Library, and learn how to find the books.
I have no idea what could be wrong, to get any kind of help , you need to learnHow does crash look? Just a crash. I can do nothing (I can still see the desktop). Video stops, music stops, mouse - sometimes I can move it, sometime I cannot, either way I have to restart my computer.
how to ask a question intelligently, and include details, look at your logs, post
the information they have.
What documentation on installing Debian have you read ? Most likely you do not have the firmware you need installed, or there is a driver problem, nobody
can guess at what is wrong with out a lot more details and info,
"What we expect you have already Done"

Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
I think I'd describe that as a "freeze" rather than a "crash." I wonder what apps are running when it happens. For what it's worth, I've been running Debian 9 GNOME here but I haven't been seeing any similar problems.DonTweaks wrote:How does crash look? Just a crash. Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
Why not to idę gnome if I like it. Whats better behind awful graphics?
Propably while looking for a logs it'd freeze 5 times in 7 minutes. I'll try to find it though.
Only chromium or firefox.

To help solve your problem, you could provide the output of:
When a computer "freezes" I always try to look at what the CPU usage is, RAM or disk I/O. In my experience there is often a process that is hogging up one of these. You type "system monitor" into GNOME or use the program "top".

Remember to update your package database after changing /etc/apt/sources.list (and before attempting to install any new packages):
EDIT: or keep your sources "clean" and just install the .deb instead:
https://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/non- ... _amd64.deb
Code: Select all
# apt update
Prepending LC_ALL=C will make your commands "speak" English, like this:DonTweaks wrote:I havent got english version of debian

Hello. Package of intel-microcode is in non-free repo. You should enable it in your sources.list. Also, you should install firmware-linux-free.

Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
shouldn't we make sure what the freezes nature is?
during the freeze, can you switch toanother vt with e.g. ctrl-alt-F2?
have a look at Xorg.0.log (is that still in /var/log?), dmesg, journalctl around the time the crash occured.
also 'top' in a terminal before the freeze happens, to see if maybe something eats resources.

Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
This looks to me like the elephant in the room, perhaps your overclock is not stable. I searched and found overclockers running higher voltages at 4.6 to 4.8GHz.DonTweaks wrote:...

I suggest you reduce your OC to ~4.6GHz.

After installation I mentioned last post, I said that only one monitor were working at the moment. Still the same + I think that was the problem of freezes. How to fix it?
Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
CPU's are not equal, some can withstand more overclocking than others of the same make and model. The first thing you need to do is to disable overvlocking and see if this stops the freezes. If so, then you can try higher rates step by step until you find the maximum that your processor can stand. There are also programs and scripts that deliberately put massive load on the CPU and check the computations it makes that you can use to help.
Re: Debian 9 gnome crashes all the time
I think the problem was made by graphics drivers.
How to make rest of monitors work, though?
