[SOLVED] Wlan problem (Atheros AR9285)

#1 Post by Auvo »

Greetings!
I am (once again) struggling with wlan problems. Just installed Debian 9.3 with LXQT to my girlfriend's old mini laptop. Wired ethernet works, though there is some problem with that also, as it doesn't reconnect every time I re-plug the cable after trying wireless.

The computer is Packard Bell Dot S.

So the wireless adapter is AR9285 and it's driver should be ath9k as it is:

Still the wlan is completely dead. Connman doesn't find any wireless networks, nor allows even scan for them. Actually, after reboot, Connman tells there is "1 Found, 0 Powered": Image
Hitting Fn + F3 turns it "1 Found, 1 Powered", but nothing else changes. ip a gives this result after reboot:

enp1s0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
I tried to set /etc/network/interfaces as:

Code: Select all

auto wlp2s0
iface wlp2s0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid 4G-Gateway-229E
wireless-mode Master
But still no help. And I'd like to get it running without the need of setting them manually each time I use another wifi.

Code: Select all

root@Pentu:/home/ninni# lsmod | grep ath9k
ath9k 94208 0

Someone on some other forum (perhaps Linux Mint) said that acer_wmi module was conflicting with the wireless. I have that module loaded too:

Code: Select all

root@Pentu:/home/ninni# lsmod | grep acer_wmi
acer_wmi 20480 0
sparse_keymap 16384 1 acer_wmi
rfkill 24576 6 bluetooth,acer_wmi,cfg80211

wmi 16384 1 acer_wmi
I tried to modprobe -r acer_wmi, which "works" as it doesn't give any output, but still doesn't help anyway,. Should I try to blacklist it? According to the above, several modules (which might be more useful), are using the acer_wmi, so I haven't tried to blacklist it. Full list of lsmod, if needed for some reason:

I don't know, but it looks like you're missing some packages over wifi network manager, try installing network-manager-gnome to see if enables that part.

There are several ways to use wifi here https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

Sometimes people have trouble with one method, and try another, like /etc/network/interfaces and when they find that doesn't work either they leave the settings in the file. This would be a mistake, because if you try network manager now with those settings left in the interfaces file, it won't use the iface.

Take your time, pick one method, stick to it.

found an old thread, you didn't mention if you searched the forum?
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=84462

if the acer_wmi is the problem, then after modprobe -r you should probably remove and reprobe the athk driver also right?

p.s. no offense to linux mint, but if your are using debian, it is a good idea to prefer debian documentation. The arch wiki is veryy good, maybe the best around but even there it's not totally reliable for debian.

Thanks. I tried this, and using Gnome network manager I'm able to connect my wifi. At least it says so. Still can't use the internet though. Pinging 8.8.8.8 gets a response, but the browser gives some DNS error. And for example, I can't reach repositories using apt. And also, wifi is always down by default, so after a reboot I need to turn it on using the keyboard shortcut.

For the DNS problem, I checked /etc/resolv.conf. It looks like this:

Code: Select all

nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver ::1
I tried to set it manually to Google (8.8.8.8 ), but looks like Gnome network manager (or some other program) overwrites it on boot. I guess I should try resolvconf program, but as I'm at work now, I don't have LAN here to download the package.

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention that. I have been searching widely over the internet, including this forum. That link you provided, doesn't help because the fix to his problem was to hit the keyboard shortcut to turn wifi on. I know that Mint and Debian aren't exactly the same thing. But, as there is a limited amount of knowledge around, about this specific hardware (AR9285), I have broadened my search to other linux distros. Also there's lots of thing in common with Debian and Mint, as one is a derivative to other. I have used Arch Wiki for many things and have got great help from there, but I'd say that many things work more differently in Arch than in Mint. Why I brought this acer_wmi thing up was just because I'm out of ideas what to do.
if the acer_wmi is the problem, then after modprobe -r you should probably remove and reprobe the athk driver also right?
Maybe. Haven't done that before. I'm concerned about what else stops working if I blacklist them all. Or should I be able to reprobe those other modules to get them non-dependent from acer_wmi? Anyway, looks like the driver isn't the problem here. Please see my response to Capitain_Jack above.

This now sounds as a default network problem, as it connects and pings, maybe it's not the default route for internet, give it a try:

This setting sometimes is on BIOS, something like "enable wifi", what maker/model that mini is?

In order to do that, you must add lines, not change, how you did it?

On first try, I removed the default ones and then added only the google dns. Now I tried also adding 8.8.8.8 to end of the list. But it doesn't matter, because the file gets overwritten anyway. So after reboot it always looks like in my post above.

This now sounds as a default network problem, as it connects and pings, maybe it's not the default route for internet, give it a try:
https://serverfault.com/questions/12355 ... e-in-linux[/quote]
I took a look at this, but I don't understand. The default route already looks like it is advised to set in the post. I tried to delete default route and then add it, but it doesn't affect anything as it stays the same.

It is Packard Bell Dot S. It's BIOS is very limited, and boot order is the only modification available. I also tried setting ip, mask and default DNS server manually via Gnome utility. I set the default DNS to 8.8.8.8, which didn't affect anything. But I found out that as there were manually added default config, it connected automatically on boot.

One thing occurred me, what BIOS version you're using? Take a look at maker site and do the update, if that is the case, it may solve this kind of problem (enable wifi at boot)

BIOS seems to be up to date (v3.16). Which is actually great, because I'm not sure I'd like to update bios from Linux. But I guess I could live with turning wifi on after boot, if I got it to work otherwise. So the route/dns/whatever problem is more important.

Ok, now it looks like it works if I add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to /etc/resolv.conf. But the problem is that the file gets overwritten at reboot. I tried to set DNS servers via Gnome Network Manager, using this guide: https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfigur ... orkManager Here's a screenshot (sorry for the Finnish language, but I think you can guess most of it. And now I'm tethering wifi with my phone instead of my home wifi, if you wonder why the SSID has changed from what I said earlier)
Image

But it doesn't work. But as soon I modify /etc/resolv.conf, it starts working and works until next reboot. How is this possible? I also tried using resolvconf program with instructions I found here: https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfigur ... nf_program But I didn't understand how it is supposed to work with Network Manager. Please help!

I think this is the final solution, although not standard, the thing is put this netbook on internet, no matter what.
