[SOLVED] UEFI install wouldn't boot on Sony SVP1x21

Hi,

After installing Debian 9 in UEFI mode (yes I selected UEFI mode option during installation),
but I am unable to boot into Debian ......


My Aptio Setup Utility Settings are:

Advanced:
Intel Virtuaalization Technology [Enabled]
Execute-Disable Bit Capability [Enabled]

USB Ports [Enabled]
Memory Card Slot [Enabled]
Wireless Devices [Enabled]

Intel AT Support System [Disabled]
Intel AT Suspend [Disabled]


Security:
TPM State: Disabled
Secure Boot: Disabled



Boot:
Boot Configuration:
Boot Mode [UEFI]
External Device Boot [Disabled]

Boot Priority:
Select 1st Boot Priority [Internal Hard Disk Drive]
Select 2nd Boot Priority [External Device]



Your VAIO failed to start Windows msg. comes up after reboot:
The operating system was not found.
The following option(s) may resolve this error:


Start troubleshooting (recovery)
or
Start BIOS setup
and
Start VAIO Care (Rescue Mode)



If I choose "Start troubleshooting (recovery)" it will get back into the same screen.
If I choose "Start BIOS setup" it will take me to BIOS
And "Start VAIO Care (Rescue Mode)" will take me to below:


When I save changes in BIOS , it will boot into "VAIO Care (Rescue Mode)" with following options:
Start troubleshooting (recovery)
or
Start BIOS setup
or
Start from media (USB Device/optical disc)
or
Contact & Support

Shut down, Diagnostic History and "Exit and restart from Windows" are other options.



I have searched the net, and some people advice to switch to Legacy mode (where all works fine for me as well) instead of UEFI,
but I can not see reason why the UEFI mode should not work ....

Booting from USB drive running Jessie (In Legacy mode I see that the SSD is partitioned as GPT).

/boot/efi/ is empty

and on my other PC I have just installed in UEFI mode that has:
/boot/efi/EFI/debian/grubx64.efi

can I copy the file from this PC to the Sony SVP1x21 laptop?

using the install media in rescue mode,
all worked as it should, but still unable to boot debian ..

When booting from USB pen drive [i386 ], /boot/efi/ is empty ....
but was showing /boot/efi/EFI/debian/grubx64.efi after re-installing it in "rescue mode"

This is because /boot/efi is mounted to the EFI system partition in the booted system but you will see an empty folder if you look under /boot/efi on your main root partition from the "live" environment (because the ESP is not mounted).

It sounds like your motherboard is only booting Microsoft's bootmgfw.efi bootloader, this is common (unfortunately).

The last Windows/Debian multiboot problem on this forum has the solution you need:

my case is that I only want Debian in UEFI mode (no Windows on any other partitions) and the solution involves
making changes in Windows ....

Yes, sorry, I wasn't clear enough — I meant that you should follow the advice I gave in that thread (which the OP did not actually follow):

As you don't have Windows then you don't have to worry about moving the original, just rename Debian's grubx64.efi loader and move it to $ESP/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi

Just tried in rescue mode this:

mkdir -p /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot
cp /boot/efi/EFI/debian/grubx64.efi /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi

But no luck laptop would boot, but instead I get "Your VAIO failed to start Windows" ...
have I missed something?

I have restarted the PC, left the default settings ON in BIOS first boot device HDD, booted from external DVD-ROM,
installed the system and all works now in UEFI mode ....
