Looking to install Debian with lxde
Looking to install Debian with lxde
Hi.
I am looking to install Debian on an old Pentium 4 with 1 gb ram . I would prefer Debian with lxde as DE . I couldn't find a link from where I can download it .
All I see is Debian xfce . Please provide me the link . And I would prefer if it its link to iso which can fit on a CD (under 700 MB)
thank you

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
The CD Team doesn't make separate .iso files for the different desktops environments anymore.
This might be a solution for you?

or, if you prefer the official "live" edition without closed source or non-free software or firmware:

Some people prefer the "Testing" edition for desktop systems:

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
Just download network installer and install os using it. In section "Selecting and Installing Software", select lxde.

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
I run Debian LXDE on my 32 bit netbook. Feel free to ask me anything about it.
Run the netinstaller and choose LXDE during install.
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... etinst.iso
No such thing as 32bit iso for Debian LXDE.

Yes there is. I gave several links in my earlier message.Lysander wrote:No such thing as 32bit iso for Debian LXDE.

All of Debian's ISOs are hybrids. That means you shouldn't use an optical disc, simply copy the iso bit by bit to an usb stick and Bob's your uncle.

That's not correct. Bob is not my uncle.Bloom wrote:All of Debian's ISOs are hybrids. That means you shouldn't use an optical disc, simply copy the iso bit by bit to an usb stick and Bob's your uncle.
But seriously, "hybrid" means it is writeable to either optical media or USB.

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
Yes, I know. I meant no-one should use optical discs anymore for installing ISO's. Way too slow. Since almost all iso's are hybrid these days, there's no excuse to not use an usb-stick.
For those working with an ancient pc that has usb connectors but no way to boot from usb-sticks, you can use the Plop Boot Manager.

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
I installed LXDE on my Debian 9.3, 32-bit older Pentium. It works great. I copied the iso to a USB drive using the dd command:
dd if=~/Downloads/debian9.1-i386.iso of=/dev/sdf bs=4MB; sync
You'll have to change the input filename for your downloaded iso, and output filename for your USB port (mine is sdf). The sync command ensures that all the data is written to the USB before you quit to copy operation. I updated from 9.1 to 9.2 to 9.3 over time using the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Right now I'm using kernel version 4.9.0-4-686-pae.
Good luck, and enjoy your system.

Re: Looking to install Debian with lxde
It's good to know which chipset you have in your Pentium 4 - because their was during Wheezy release and probably still is a graphic issue if using the video builtin on intel i910 chipset motherboards when starting the xserver ( not enough video memory available to run the xserver )
There is a workaround if you have an i910 chipset mobo with an available pic slot or a pci express slot. Find an old pci or pci express video card with at least 64 MB vram - make the appropriate changes in the video section of the bios if using the pci express lanes to enable the pci express slot
than your install should proceed flawlessly.
good luck and cross you fingers that your computer has at least i915 chipset
or a pci or pci express video card with at least 64 MB of vram to run the XFCE session
