My beloved Playonlinux Apps

#1 Post by bester69 »

I created several ext4-file-containers for each app, so i can back/restore them easily and faster,

The wonderfull thing about playonlinux (wine) is that you can keep using the win apps in all your linuxs for ever.

Dont understand the purpose of running Win Firefox on Linux.

Totally baffled, actually.

Understand that Wine *can* be infected, just like Win.

hehe, sometimes i need to browse in mode windows so the web server give me the windows download, and not the linux one.

Wine infected its no problem, its a isolate layout.. anyway i dont bother to work in a enviroment infected as long as it's just a tool it gives me what i need, i know once its closed the virus goes to sleep.

We all know there're no virus in linux, tha's a myths they keep saying, but the trusth is none knows anybody has ever gotten infected..., but trolls keep saying otherwise.. In real life Linux has no virus!!, repeat with me!

hehe, Virus are like UFO's they say they exist, but you know..

Fool the site with a user agent spoof, then. There's extensions for that.

I just employ a user agent add-on in firefox for that.

I don't see the point of running most of those Windows programs when all but maybe 2 of them have perfectly good Linux native analogs.

I got it work by installing S2TC compression libraries textures (include i386 version):
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc:i386 (<-- Needed to work to Add i386 Architecture)

Thought there's an available native version that works great, I prefer the wine version for some imaginable reasons.. :D

I have seen one, so yes I do know. Should I start a new topic, and tell the story, ?

my parents saw one in 90's, in a night stormy day, they say it was like a red ball of fire that rised to sky, stop it, did some impossible maneuvers and dissipated.. Im sure they exists among us, thought ive never seen them.
And I suspect mandela's effect is also in some way truth, too many proofs, cant be just a mind trick. I remember Tom Cruise with glasses and white Shirt in risky bussiness, and now it dress pig shirt and no glasses, but if you look for ancient parodies, you'll see they all dress white shirt an sunglassess. furthermore there are a lot of books/newpapers/magazines references talking about that scene with tom dressing sunglasses while sliding along the floor. See also comments in youtube, most of people is in shock.

And check this, with editing, just like all of us remember it:

and some comments
Except for the pink shirt, this is exactly how it still should be. Awesome job!

That wallpaper...and that desktop. My eyes have been defiled.
Furthermore:
7zip has better Linux alternative,
Firefox is the same browser on Linux lol,
Acrobat 11 ->Evince, Okular, whatever,
Google Earth is also on Linux,
Picasa is being deprecieted, is replaced by Google Photos,
LibreOffice should suit your needs perfectly unless you work in a big office or for big MS Office clients,
AutoCAD is maybe only program you need inside WINE.

Honestly, this list is useless IMHO.

Yes, the Google is giving us Google Earth Pro 7.3 for free now. Unfortunately, that version has a major display bug for my Intel Skylake 520 graphics, but I can:

use the older standard GE 7 I still had a deb for.

use GE Pro 7.1.8, which works fine.

use Bumblebee to have GE Pro 7.3 use the Nvidia GPU for the 3D rendering.

Indeed, and some in that screenshot I refuse to use on windows, they're that awful. (anything Adobe, for a start)
AutoCAD is the catch though, only older versions run in wine, and they don't support current .dwg formats... because Autodesk are a bunch of wankers and change this regularly to force upgrades.
AFAIK, there's no way around this short of paying the ludicrous price or pirating it, and running it in a VM.

Personally I use QCAD with the non-free .dwg handler, it's a tiny fraction of the price, native, and it opens the latest file formats. But it's 2D only.
It angers me that I have to deal with autocad formats at all, but people just keep giving me stuff in .dwg. Grrr.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.

Hi,
Swat4 works great,
Im using it since Jessie and now stretch with playonlinux for tree or four years, Ive tried many wine versions, and the only one that works properly to me is wine 1.4.1.

7zip has better Linux alternative,
im ok with peazip, I just keep 7zip just in case, becouse it works gold with wine and its a great peace of software.
Firefox is the same browser on Linux lol,
I keep Firefox in wine, in order to be recognized as a windows client. Sometimes I want to dowload the windows version, and need to be recognized as a windows client, I know this can be done with some extension or tweaks, but i didnt learn it.
Acrobat 11 ->Evince, Okular, whatever,
You've no clue here, Acrobar is the pdf editor, furthermore it has a great ocr.
Google Earth is also on Linux,
Yes, Ive it, but installation always give me some headaches, and playonlinux version allow me to have it ready (botles wines) like a plug and play console cartridge (That whats rally great about playonlinux.); Ive all the installations in just one raw file.
Picasa is being deprecieted, is replaced by Google Photos,
Picasa is a great peace of software, and there's nothing better available. I dont bother deprecated software, and i want offline applications, probably and thanks to playonlinux I will keep using Picasa in next few years...As everyone can understand many applications doesnt expire as for its final purpose.
AutoCAD is maybe only program you need inside WINE.
Its Autocad 2005, and that version works gold. You know, its playonlinux (plug and play concept), no installation after first time... You've some open source alternatives, but I always have best software installed.. Althougt there's is a clon linux alternative for Autocad in 2 Dnamed DraftSight

I also use TextAloudMP3 with TTS loquendo Voices, so I can listen web pages, pdf's , etc, or convert text to audio files. There is yet not a worthy opens source alternative for text to voice.

Ive read more or less all of them,, and my point of view, its there're no linux viruses in real life.. I cant explain you any more, you and me wont agree about this... Im a informatic, and i just will say this anonymous quote: "In real life nobody knows anyone that has ever been infected by a virus under linux." You can find that information among those articles coming from admins linux systems and other experts, giving its own experience and feedback about the viruses in linux. I think, I've more chances to see an alive mermaid than a virus in linux.

You install an application with playonlinux, and then you move the installarion into a raw image file, so you can copy/move the installation with just one file.
Easy
0- Create the raw image file: sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=swat4.wine bs=100M count=30
1- Give it a format: sudo mkfs.ext4 swat4.wine
2- Put inside playonlinux Swat4 installation:
sudo mount -t ext4 swat4.wine /mnt
sudo rsync -aAXv /home/myuser/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/swat4/ /mnt && sudo umount /mnt
3- Delete local installation, Add mount point enter in fstab and mount it to check.
rm -rf /home/myuser/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/swat4/
/media/PLAYONLINUX/swat4.wine /home/myuser/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/swat4/ auto rw,exec 0 0 0 (add line in: /etc/fstab)
sudo mount -a (mount all fstab)
