Stretch: Chromium crash leading to system reboot

Hello,

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 64
GPU: GeForce 9500 GT
System: Multiboot with Windows7, openSUSE, Fedora 27 and Debian Stretch 9.3 KDE

I can boot into Debian kernel 4.9.0-5-amd64 or 4.14.0-0.bpo.3-amd64. No problem using Firefox.
However, whenever I open Chromium browser, it crashes and the system reboots immediately after that.
No such problem with other distros or Windows. The Debian root and home partitions still have lots of room.

I would very much appreciate your suggestions and ideas.

What page specifically? I don't think Google has any official download page for it, they have Chrome and Chromium is open-source alternative for it. Give us the link/provide us the exact instructions and commands you used to install it. No one wants to participate in a guessing game.

Now, why would you even consider installing something from external sources when you have it at your fingertips already? What you should try instead is to use the package provided in Debian repos.

So it was a faulty install. If you were worried that Chromium isn't updated in Stretch, don't be. Security updates cover the updates for the most recent browsers (excluding Firefox, Debian Stable ships firefox-esr package). But I've noticed that Google Chrome updates a bit faster than Debian updates Chromium.

I don't know if Chromium and Chrome are the same, but I avoid using both,
had lot's of problems with Chromium, and crashes. The problems stopped when I stopped using it. FireFox-esr, seems ok.

Well, most MS windows users don't agree with me either, that is why they choose MS windows, the most popular OS, but I don't care, I prefer my browser, and system.
And I don't have all the problems with system crashes ,etc that so many others
seem to have.

While we are on the subject, I noticed the other day, they say Ubuntu is the
most popular and "trendy", linux distro,...Does that mean I should be using it, since it is the most "trendy" ?

The problem only surfaced recently.

The work-around would be to disable:

Chromium then crashed and system rebooted!

Still no go!

Google Chrome and Chromium share the same code base for the most part, but are two distinctly different applications. Please start using the names correctly, and please change to the correct package name in the thread title.

Obviously, the next thing is to see if the real Chromium program from Debian causes the same crashes.

Have you tried to search for possible bugs to Chromium? Well, I have and have found this:

Debian bug tracking site exists for a reason.
It's a bug most likely, so there is little you can do about it except wait it out.

Do you run in Chromium any extensions? If so, try to turn them off.

This makes me wonder if there is something in the browsers SPECTRE mitigation and thread isolation that doesn't work with some corner case kernel / hardware setups.



It sure SOUNDS like Chrome / Chromium is somehow crashing the kernel when it goes down anyways, and that is the only thing I can think of that really changed much in recent days.

First thing I would do is start looking at getting the kernel logs and maybe debug logs running just before a crash and see if that is actually what's happening, and what exactly is causing the crash. Then file a bug against it.

have you removed all of chromiums config and cache files?
most likely in ~/.config/chromium, ~/.cache/chromium ~/.cache/webkit*
doesn't hurt to look in ~/ and ~/.local/share, too.
