How do I view Logs in Stretch?

Prior to stretch, using Gnome-shell to open Logs showed me logs. But in Stretch I get nothing but empty pages. I assume Stretch has changed something.

So how does one view logs now? Why is there a Logs app that is only ever empty?

I don't know. Maybe you misconfigured the app or GNOME logs is just shite. However, the logs are there. I don't know what logs in particular you are after, but try

as root:

Open a terminal and use journalctl.
last boot: journalctl -b
only errors/critical messages: journalctl -p err -b
follow the log: journalctl -f
a single service/unit: journalctl -u example.service

I recommend enabling persistent logging and restrict log size
/etc/systemd/journald.conf

SystemMaxUse=128M
