Why don't you just get the Debian 9 image, it is available:
Here: https://www.debian.org/distrib/ then install it.
You should contact the server/hosting company you show, maybe ask them
why they can not install the image, it is available.
The server provider I use will install any image the customer wants, as
long as they can provide the image or a valid link to the image the customer wants to use.
It does not make sense to me to install a older image, and then try to upgrade, but I suppose you could upgrade from Debian 8, but it is not "automatic" , for details on what is involved see this:
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... ading.html
Pay particular attention to :
4.1. Preparing for the upgrade

We suggest that before upgrading you also read the information in Chapter 5, Issues to be aware of for stretch. That chapter covers potential issues which are not directly related to the upgrade process but could still be important to know about before you begin.
There might be reasons they do not want to use the Debian 9 image, maybe
you should ask them .

The question is if its possible to do an dist upgrade without human interaction. I have done an upgrade from debian 7 to debian 8 on my Raspberry pi. This take a long time and finaly i sad simple yes to every question. The vserver is new installed minimal. There is no Problem then the upgrade fails.

I still think the best option would be get the Debian 9 image
it is available , Debian 9 image, it is available:
Here: https://www.debian.org/distrib/
then have them install it. It will be to their advantage, 1st off to make a sale,
and since you are purchasing multiple servers, also, once they have the
Debian 9 image, they will be able to offer it to other customers as well.

The only time I would suggest or recommend trying to upgrade like
you are saying , would be on servers that are all ready running, and it
would not be practicable to re-install a newer version.
Like Debiman says, Yes it is possible, but I would not count on it either.

Did you read ? https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... ading.html
And especially the Chapter 5:

This post was for Raspbian wheezy to jessie, but it also works from Debian jessie to stretch.

Tested on 21 vServers and works ! Thank you for your help.

Upgrading does not mean merely updating packages. If the installation was so minimal maybe you can get away with it (or not, in which case you'll find out soon -- or late -- enough).

Anyway, let's be optimistic and wish you good luck :)

Hi reinob,

yes all vservers are Debian 8 minimal OS on Installation. I have upgraded them before i have installed apache etc.

The Destination of my question here was to upgrade an minimal Debian (openvz) . Now i have found the solution myself i have pasted it for people who have the same Problem. The comment was only answer of the post of debiman.
