My old Samsung GTi 9300 runs Lineage 14.1 (Android 7 base) and it's lovely
I have a new Sony XZ1 compact that has Android 8 but I will flash Lineage onto it as soon as they have an image that will work with it's hi-res music capabilities.
EDIT: rooting is not needed to run Lineage and my Samsung is not rooted.

+1 for LineageOS. I have been using it and loving it. Lots of choices, turn off features you don't want, weekly updates, monthly security updates from Google.
The only thing it can't do, yet, is protect you from CBP when you cross the border and they demand your password and plug it into their devices which suck up all of your data.

What's ironic is that copperheados, the self-professed most-hardened Android platform, loathes the idea of su, although rooting your phone is obviously a prerequisite to installing a custom rom like copperhead. If you do some digging, the copperhead developers claim that lineage claims to make patches, but because other underlying software, like the radio drivers (but definitely not limited to that), go unmaintained, some of the patches wouldn't really work.
Lineage's kernel patches page is a nightmare to browse, as well.
That said, you'll never guess which of the two OSes I'm using -- which is sad, because smartphone hardening should be a default idea in 2018.
I'm hoping to modify Copperhead over the summer. In its current state, it presents some limitations that I can work around with root and some minor modifications (with Lineage).

Ok i had some time to finish playing with rooting my phone, and i was able to install LineageOS
But i am wondering, how the hell can i install Firefox on it ?
I don't want to install Play store, and i don't want to download .apk from some shady websites.
