Hello!
I am having a strange issue with Kded5 grabbing 100% CPU from time to time. After some experimentation, I think I have found the culprit: Typing Control + F in Dolphin to search for a file.
The CPU spike will start within minutes or hours of performing a search, even if the search window in Dolphin is closed.
Could someone else with KDE (Stretch) test this before I file a bug report?

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
I haven't had issues like this since about half way thru jessie (nepomuk) so I hope it's not back. I don't use dolphin too often but it's pretty good and reliable, just not my style.Hallvor wrote:

When you say it spikes, do you mean it stays at 100% for good? I have a machine with 25 days kde uptime on stretch and it's really doing fine.
They added some cli baloo commands, but I can't find a lot of help, maybe try playing with balooctl.
ah... yeah try with baloosearch from terminal and see if it does the same thing?
No manpages, don't know where the docs are, don't know how it all fits together and don;t know how to find out. I think they went thru most of this a couple years ago so the mailing lists are hard to use also.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
Thanks for the reply!
Yes, Dolphin is (almost always) good and reliable. I had nearly a month of uptime without any issues, but did not use Control + F to find files until yesterday. (I had to find that one file among several thousand others.)
I was quick to close the wondow with the search bar, but to no avail. The CPU spiked to 100% and stayed there. I had to log out and back in again to make the computer behave in a normal manner. This is not the first time. It is more like every single time I use the search function in Dolphin.
Would you mind testing it in Dolphin?
I have no idea what baloo is, but I'll find out.
Edit: I tested baloo with "baloosearch test" from the CLI. I got no errors (or results), and the CPU seems fine.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
I did so before I posted the first time it has been a couple of hours.Hallvor wrote: Would you mind testing it in Dolphin?
I removed a lot of stuff, including all the ibus, keyboard switchers, languages, etc. and disabled a few of the search plugins in krunner. I don't use a network on that machine either, so I pruned away all the samba and other non-essentials, android phone, upgrade apps I could find. I don't use mail or that pim stuff either so akonadi isn't running.
Maybe it's looking for something on a device it can't find? Does dolphin only search for files, or does it only search for filetypes? I know the thing can use metadata, or file tagging/rating. I don't use that either though.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
I have used the search function several times over the past couple of days, but everything works as normal. It is therefore not possible for me to replicate this issue for now.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
Dolphin can be a memory hog and cpu hog, especially when copying directories over a network using FISH://
I haven't found searching causing any problems. scp works much faster and with less resources than Dolphin, so I do most network file transfers with it.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
It happened again. Also this time right after deleting local files I had searched for in Dolphin.
Any ideas?
Edit: Added logs. It happened around 10 o'clock.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
Never seen one of these before, but it doesn't sound good. Did you look it up? Also what is "PackageKit[1481]: get-updates" doing every few minutes? That sounds a little over zealous.

Re: Kded5 high CPU (Stretch)
I did search online, and it wasn't of much help. Many old and obscure bugs and few solutions. I did find something useful, though. This one is quite old, but explains how it can happen: https://kdepepo.wordpress.com/2011/05/1 ... ded4-bugs/bw123 wrote:Never seen one of these before, but it doesn't sound good. Did you look it up? I'll try disabling the search module and see how it goes.
I am guessing "PackageKit[1481]: get-updates" is looking for updates. Don't know why it does that so often, though. Anyway, it is the least of my worries right now.
