No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
Hi,
I have no internet access on a fresh install of debian 9.3.
I see no eth0 while running ip a, so I assume this is due to the network adapter not being recognized, for some reason.
From lspci I saw that I have an ethernet controller from Intel: I217-LM (rev 04)
Thanks

Re: No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
ok so you don't see eth0, what do you see with ip a? Why didn't you post the lspci info for the device? (lspci -nn is real good) Do you want me to do an internet search on the device, or did you do one already?

This one is working on one of my boxes:
Intel on-board NICs are pretty darn common. You probably just need some firmware.

Re: No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
I had no issues with a previous 9.1 live version and I would like to avoid prop firmware if possible.

Not sure what is going on, today I have internet access without doing anything. Hopefully the issue is resolved.
I getting some errors while booting, not sure if they mean anything. Here is part of the dmesg:

Re: No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
Most messages (bcma, b43) are related to the Broadcom wireless adapter.derul wrote:I getting some errors while booting, not sure if they mean anything
Another one reports a missing firmware for the AMD/ATI graphic adapter, requiring the firmware-amd-graphics package (in the non-free section).
Re: No internet access on debian 9.3 (intel I217-LM)
Unfortunately it's not fixed yet. Now its down again.
I have checked its not the hardware as I dual boot with win7 and I have internet access there.
I will try comparing the dmesg when its working and when its not, to see if I get anything from that.
The broadcom wireless adapter had been an issue since I got the laptop (dell m6800) and I always had to install nonfree firmware to get it working, but I didn't have issues with the ethernet connection before.

Plug up another ethernet cable, just for grins 'n giggles.

^ yes, that.
also, when it's "down", try this:
if the first doesn't work, but the second does, then you have a name resolution problem, not an internet access problem.
