I am running Jessie.
Suddenly gnome-terminal will not do simple command like ls. It can do other commands, like cat. Xfe will not finish loading as a normal user. If I su to root, then it works. I have tried reinstalling them both (gnome-terminal and xfe), but no luck. Hoping someone has encountered something like this before. - Thanks

Re: on Jessie, suddenly gnome-terminal will not do ls
I am not sure what happened, but unmounting several sshfs mounts cured the problem.

sshfs is fragile, in my experience.
it's good for gui filemanager convenience, but in the terminal you should simply ssh into the directory in question.
although it has always worked for me.
also gnome-terminal used to do some really weird things, like starting every terminal window as a login session.
i sincerely hope this brainfart has been fixed, but gnome being what it is, who knows.
and who knows what else they did to it.
in short:
you might want to use a different terminal emulator for those remote adventures.
