New HP Elitebook 840G5 install black screen

#1 Post by DebThyName »

I am trying to get debian 9.4 installed via the net install USB iso. When I choose to do the graphical install or just the regular install as soon as I hit the entire key the screen goes black and I get zero input on the screen. I have tried editing the parameters to include vga=ask nomodeset acpi=off but no matter what I try I can not get past this black screen.

Out of frustration I tried a different distro (mint) which did install as I would expect it to. I apologize for not being able to give you more but I am not sure what or how I can gather more details at this point.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Mint includes the inxi hardware listing tool by default, so what's the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F
Much new video hardware requires non-free firmware, which Debian does not include as a matter of policy, but Mint does.

Newer Intel hardware requires that you have firmware-misc-nonfree installed from the nonfree section of the repository.

https://packages.debian.org/stretch/fir ... sc-nonfree

Though in your case I would suggest the version in stretch-backports: https://packages.debian.org/stretch-bac ... sc-nonfree

Ordinarily, I would suggest the kernel in stretch-backports, too, but I don't think it has the full Spectre and Meltdown hardening that the stock 4.9 Debian kernel or the backported MX 17 4.15 kernel has. Hopefully the 4.15 kernel will make its way into backports also.

At the risk of sounding completely lost, can you point me in the direction of how I would bundle the firmware-misc-nonfree package into my installation media?

I apologize for the dumb question.

Thanks you

I have had display issues with several HP Elitebook models in EFI mode. If you are booting in EFI mode, try to boot in legacy/BIOS mode.

Not a dumb question at all--I missed that the installer was giving you the problem. There is a version of the netinstall ISO that includes the firmware, and any good search engine will be able to find it for you.
