Hello everyone!
I've know about Debian and the Linux world for only two days and I decided to install Debian on two old laptops that used windows xp (as I doubt they would be able to support other OS)
I installed the ISO image on a usb stick and started the installation on my hp compaq mini 700el and I came to a page that told me to insert another drive to add the missing firmware (b43/ucode15.fw b43-open/ucode15 .fw)
What do I do? The installation page warns me that if the firmware is missing, the PC will not work properly. Is there a way to add them to the usb stick?
Thank you for your attention, and I apologize if this question has already been asked but I could not find anything like it .. if it has already been resolved, please show me!

absent firmware
Re: absent firmware
I found this on the Debian wiki
https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware#Firmwa ... stallation
I tried putting the zip files (for stretch since it's what I'm trying to install) in the firmware folder, however that didn't work as well...
I'm confused on what to do, any suggestions?

Re: absent firmware
Either complete the install and install the package firmware-b43-installer or firmware-b43legacy-installer
OR
install one of the unofficial builds with non-free firmware
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unoff ... 0+nonfree/

Re: absent firmware
There are a lot results when I searched for b43+firmware on the forum, also ucode15 gets some results that might help. The internet has dozens of pages, it is a well-known issue with b43 devices.vitdut3 wrote:...and I apologize if this question has already been asked but I could not find anything like it .. if it has already been resolved, please show me!
If the device you have is this:
Code: Select all
$ lspci -nn | grep BCM
07:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Limited BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
It is possible that the firmware rules for this have changed, so if the non-free installer works, then please let me know?Firmware is not packaged by the Debian Project. It must be downloaded and extracted, which can be performed by the firmware-b43-installer...
An Internet connection is required.
Thanks.

Re: absent firmware
I'm installing Debian 10.4 non-free from a thumb drive, and all appears to go well. That's until I get a message telling me that I'm missing 3 firmware files.
b43/ucode13.fw, b43-open/ucode13.fw, and b43-open.
I've examined the flash drive files and found in the "firmware" folder "firmware-b43-installer_019-4_all.deb" and "firmware-b43legacy-installer_019-4_all.deb"
When I search for the firmware, all I find are these same files. It appears that the actual firmware files are missing.
My question is this: where do I get a copy of the actual firmware files? They don't seem to be present anywhere that I'm aware of.
Second question: when I boot this machine (HP DV9620us), the screen shows all of the boot steps properly, but once it switches to the MATE screen, the display is nothing but scrambled semi-horizontal lines. Could this be caused by the lack of firmware in the wifi card?
I'd appreciate any help that's available.
Thank you,
Bill

Did you not read the thread ?

The link appeared to be broken, but I replaced it with this: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... -firmware/Hallvor wrote:Either complete the install and install the package firmware-b43-installer or firmware-b43legacy-installer

Re: absent firmware
firmware-b43-installer and firmware-b43legacy-installer are just scripts that download the firmware. Ethernet is best for this install.
https://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx#Drivers
firmware installer for the b43 driver
This package downloads and installs the firmware needed by the b43 kernel driver for some Broadcom 43xx wireless network cards.
https://packages.debian.org/buster/firm ... -installerb43 and b43legacy
These drivers are included as modules in Debian kernel images. Firmware from userspace is required for device operation.
Firmware is not packaged by the Debian Project. It must be downloaded and extracted, which can be performed by the firmware-b43-installer, firmware-b43legacy-installer or firmware-b43-lpphy-installer packages during their installation. An Internet connection is required.

In my opinion, the easiest thing, and should just work,is the unofficial/non-free/firmware/ CD image, ...
Maybe wait and see what vitdut3,says ,if they do try it, OR just try it your self,...or if you are advanced enough , install the firmware /drivers , .....Now that the same instructions have all been posted twice, Any further questions ?
