Debian on ASUS UX331UN-EG037T

#1 Post by giand748 »

Hello everybody,

I would like to install Debian at the first use of my pc ( ASUS UX331UN-EG037T).

This pc has the following characteristics:
Processeur Intel Core i7-8550U (Quad-Core 1.8 GHz / 4 GHz Turbo - Cache 8 Mo)
8 Go de mémoire vive LPDDR3 (8 Go intégrés - pas d'upgrade possible)
13.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080)
graphic board: NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 Go dedicated memory
SSD M.2 SATA de 256 Go
Integrated fingerprint reader for secure access
Windows 10 Famille 64 bits (to be installed at the first boot)

Is it possible to install Debian in such machine? Have you any suggestions/link to follow? any possible threads on the battery consumption and turbo boosting activation?

thank you so much in advance for any suggestions
gian

Integrated fingerprint reader for secure access
The works are still in the initial stage
Processeur Intel Core i7-8550U (Quad-Core 1.8 GHz / 4 GHz Turbo - Cache 8 Mo)
8 Go de mémoire vive LPDDR3 (8 Go intégrés - pas d'upgrade possible)
13.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080)
Don't worry about it. Will work fine.
graphic board: NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 Go dedicated memory
There is a chance that there will be problems. The card is new (mid 2017). it may be that you will have to install newer kernel and everything related to it (from backports).

Your eighth generation Kaby Lake platform will still require some non-free firmware (firmware-misc-nonfree package). The 384.111 nvidia-driver in stretch-backports should support your GPU, even if the free driver won't, so you may as well update the firmware package and intel-microcode from stretch-backports while it's enabled. If you have wi-fi, it no doubt will also require non-free firmware.

Hi None1975 and stevepusser,

thank you for your answers.

Finally I bought the notebook: ASUS UX331UN-EG037T.

I started the debian 9.4 installer from usb key but .... I stopped ( :( snif snif) it because the program did not found the wifi . It asked me the following microcodes::

iwiwifi-8265-26.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-25.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-24.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-23.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-22.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-21.ucode
iwiwifi-8265-20.ucode

I searched for them but I was not able to find something.

have you a link from where I could download them?

thank you in advance

gian

Use netinstaller with non-free firmware included:
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... d64/bt-cd/

You will need linux kernel, firmware from stretch-backorts since your laptop is too new for Stretch's default 4.9 kernel. Search for Debian backports on the net for a guide to set them up..
If this is your first take on Linux, I would honestly recommend Ubuntu 17.10. You will be able to upgrade it to 18.04 LTS by the end of April.

Hey, what about trying to a Debian-based distro, MX 17.1? (conflict of interest disclosure, I help with it) We have the 4.15 kernel and all that firmware jazz already installed.

I would also bet that your laptop has the Optimus hardware, so the standard graphics are going to be Intel 620 or 630, and you'll have to set up Bumblebee use the Nvidia card on demand.

I have a new laptop for package building on the way now from Amazon that was just released today...it uses an new Intel wi-fi chip that I'll have to get the firmware directly from Intel until the Debian packages include it.

and they're already out of stock. Good thing it was ordered Saturday!

MX-17 is very good distro, but it's a bit limited. There is a reason why default DE is XFCE. It's very modular and stable (plus it doesn't need systemd), so you can backport every new program without the fear of dependency hell. Problem with that is obvious, users are tied to one (maybe two, I'd add MATE to the mix) DE and WMs.

Hogwash and poppycock! Users can install other desktops either with the standard Debian commands or with an even easier one-click method in the MX package installer. The MX Tweak application does only tweak XFCE, so a user falls back to standard Debian methods to customize their desktop on those other DEs. I'm also working on a respin that adds KDE 5 to XFCE and gets them to live together happily, like I did for KDE 4 for the previous releases.

This exact question is addressed in our new FAQ, by the way.

thank to all of you. I will study your suggestions.
ps: I'm not a debian beginner neither an expert. I do not like ubuntu, I find it complicate.
