Hi,
I just received a used Acer V5-122p laptop which doesn't have an Ethernet port. Acer sells an ethernet adapter which connects to their laptop through some proprietary interface, and I'm considering buying it, if it works with Debian.
Here is the link to the adapter.

Does anyone have experiences in installing Debian(i'm considering Debian 9, but info on any versions would help) on Acer laptops with this ethernet adapter ?
If so, does Debian automatically recognize the ethernet connection or did you have to do something to make it recognize ?
A big appreciation for your inputs.
Thanks

Depending on your use case there might be other options. For example, kernel has ethernet over usb modules so that you can form a network connection over usb. This is used nowadays as a sort of replacement for serial as one can then ssh into a box with this

There are also physical usb-ethernet adaptors.
So, when you say propietary acer cable, you mean like a non standard port?
If the device is truly that unique and you have no datasheet or other knowledge of how it works, then you likely need to get a kernel module from acer for it to work.

I believe that's a non-standard interface.
I have a USB-ethernet adapter which you suggested too. if I go with this route, where can I find the driver ?

^ have you tried plugging it in and see if it's recognized?
maybe it doesn't require additional drivers at all.
sucks to have a machine like this, you are forced to buy their overpriced products.
but if that's what they offer, you should at least consider it.
doesn't necessarily mean it requires proprietary software.
and a web search "linux Acer Converter Cable" - first result:

someone sharing their experience. maybe helpful?

...meaning taht the connector is acer's own?spookyaction wrote:connects to their laptop through some proprietary interface

From the manufacturer. That is, if they have designed the thing so that it will not work without their software, then you can get it from them only. But as said above,, you have not demonstrated that this is indeed the case, so you should first try to see if these devices work with the openly available kernel code.spookyaction wrote:.. where can I find the driver ?
