"After 43 years, this is the first day that we are announcing, and will be distributing, a custom Linux kernel," Microsoft President Brad Smith said on stage at an event in San Francisco...
When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took the job in 2014, one of the first things he did was announce that "Microsoft Loves Linux." Since then, Microsoft has added robust support for Linux in its Azure cloud platform, while letting developers integrate Linux with their copies of Windows 10. In 2015, too, Microsoft developed a much smaller Linux-based technology as part of a larger open-source software package.
This, though, is the first time that Microsoft not only developed a version of Linux all its own, and then made it the cornerstone of a product offering. It's just proof that anything is possible.
Finally, a more proprietary Linux kernel.

There is nothing stopping anyone using Linux. Microsoft included. They can release their new code just like anyone else. Not that it will do anyone bar them any good. It's what their doing with the kernel that's scary. Trying to embed their chips in to IoT and lock them down with Azure Sphere.
Under the umbrella of security they will try and get their chips into every device, be it fridge, TV, washing machine and car and camera.

So it finally got through to them...Windows NT sucks, and is not meant for the future. So they will steal someone else's patent again in order to push their modified version.
Hey, why change the strategy when it works every time, am I right? Saying that Microsoft has changed is the same as saying Americans started respecting International law (if it exists at all).
Great job Microsoft, people will never learn anyway.

They're buying out the HSR?? Guess it's time to cancel my lifetime membership...

Thanks for sharing this. I never actually bothered to research what happened to Novell until this post. It's pathetic how large-scale corporate influence pressures decent ideas and collaboration into obsolescence and replacement with a terrible alternative. I'm banking on them taking more of an Android approach and creating something parallel to Linux, but not necessarily malicious to the Linux project.

Perhaps this a Microsoft Linux kernel on its own, but think most people will likely see it as part of a Linux Microsoft system when things like Azure cloud platform are a running requirement. Still a wolf in a gnu's clothing.

Do you mean easily or ubiquitously? In the case of Debian it was a protracted battle producing a rigged voting system which resulted in forced adoption. Not really 'easy' as such.
It's more funny that some ppl make a fuss
like a... they're making their desktop linux iso which is not.
I don't give a damn about their linux based kernel they don't exist in any other gnu/linux anyway.
Beside Linus always rant against who mutate his penguin so there's no way that MS would mutate the original.
In the end they're make of use open source materials fork for their products.
Google even also made their own kernel.
I saw an old elive topaz iso buried in an old home dir got me thinking about hybrid iso and what to use to burn/write with.
Forgot about backtrack and thought I'd lookup kali to see where it's going.
I saw a lot of kali stuff online but I thought some watching this thread might like to see this - maybe even the OP
