Yet one more GDM3 Set Resolution question?

#1 Post by Schorschi »

Yet one more GDM3 Set Resolution question? I am struggle with why this issue can be addressed in a structured and concrete manner. There are 100s of not 1000s of Google entries on this topic, and of the 10 to 20 odd methods I have tried, none work, or they just obviously can't work. So the question is, has anyone figured out how to get GDM3 (greeter) to honor the Xorg configuration, so screen resolution (i.e. size) is consistent between login and presentation of desktop.

Tried, Wayland disable, monitor.xml in setup, added xrandr commands to various script entry points, etc.

Any help appreciated.

I don't use it, but looking at it's pkg page I see in the list of files it has this...

https://packages.debian.org/stretch/amd64/gdm3/filelist
/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/orca-autostart.desktop

So I would guess that an xrandr desktop file placed in /usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/ would run. Have you tried this? Also, I'd look at the documentation at /usr/share/doc/gdm3 instead of old internet posts. The changelog in particular might have some clues. There might be a way to "sync up" the greeter with the desktop, but that's not something I'd know, I don't really use a lot of gui stuff.

I don't see that you are doing any Xorg configuration, other than setting the driver, do you have any other .conf files present anywhere? Looks like it is in 1280, even though 800x600 is preferred. What resolution do you want?

Why? Do you look at the login screen all the time?
Unless the GDM resolution is 640x480, you have nothing to worry about.

That answer does not help. Need consistency in design and implementation. It is stuff like the login screen not set to the correct resolution as the desktop that 1) make Linux OS look cheap, and incomplete. 2) Many Linux user want fixed! So, get things right, so the Linux desktop environment looks like quality, polished, solution, no something that a 15 year old created in the basement.

I have tried to get xrandr to run from everywhere I can think of, and no joy at all. It is almost as if who or whom design the greeter screen, did it in a vacuum, and never expected to have any consistency between screen resolutions.

Have you tried configuring X instead of gnome/gdm3? You can make X start in the resolution you want, or maybe setting the preferred resolution for your monitor will work?

man xorg.conf.d

Amen to that, mine looks so good it makes me happy every day. Maybe you should try something less complicated, like a window manager setup? VERY satisfying.
