Whatsapp in Debian

#1 Post by Deblib »

Hi! I need to use Whatsapp on my laptop. I have tried installing yowsup-cli but when I try to register it tells me that it is an old version.

Code: Select all

~$ yowsup-cli registration --requestcode sms --phone xxxxxxxxxxx --cc xx --mcc xxx --mnc xx
yowsup-cli v2.0.15
yowsup v2.5.7

INFO:yowsup.common.http.warequest:{"login":"xxxxxxxxxxx","status":"fail","reason":"old_version"}

status: fail
reason: old_version
login: xxxxxxxxxxx
So I installed the latest version of GitHub and:

Code: Select all

~$ yowsup-cli registration --requestcode sms --phone xxxxxxxxxxx --cc xx --mcc xxx --mnc xx
bash: yowsup: the command was not found
I googled but I can't find anything that makes it clear how to set up and use Yowsup in Debian so I can use Whatsapp.
Can you help me out?

As far as I know, whatsapp desktop client is just a wrapper for the web page clent. Essentialy, they are the same thing.

You might request that the 2.5.7 version in Buster be backported to stretch-backports on the backports mailing list. If you're ignored (it happens), perhaps someone that is familiar with backporting could do it for you if you don't want to tackle it yourself.

I would say that the reason the yowsup command was not found in your original post's error message is because you installed the manual version somewhere that's not on the system's binary executable PATH.

https://web.whatsapp.com

You just fire up the website and scan the QR code once with your phone to get in.
It would be a good solution but I am looking for a method that allows me to dispense with (turn off) my mobile phone and continue using Whatsapp, although I am not sure if yowsup can be...

My experience is that it just kind of tethers your phone. When your phone is on, and nearby you can work through your PC. When the phone is off you can't.

when your phone is off, whatsapp is off

Well, this one https://github.com/gsantner/whatsie works fine for both my 'Stretch' and 'Buster' machines
