Timeshift Alternative?

#1 Post by llewellen »

A search of the package list directories (all releases) returned no listing for Timeshift. Is there an alternative for Debian-testing? Thank you.

I'm running Debian Testing and I installed Timeshift from the .deb file downloaded from their github page, and it works fine: https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift

Thanks. I'm leery of doing that because I have recently encountered some problems with another app that I downloaded in a .deb file directly from the app site. It caused some issues in updating.

Thank you. Sadly, there isn't a package for Testing but no matter because I intend to install Stable on my main system at the next release.

The mx15 versions here are built on vanilla Jessie, and the mx17 on vanilla Stretch, using pbuilder. http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test/t/timeshift/

I dont know, you.. but the only worthy linux Timeshift I know is system's snapshots.. In My case I will hightly recommend you Btrfs file system, Its best thing I did since I switched to linux's world. Thats a real time machine linux like virtualbox snapshots, and It never fails.

Im everyday installing and testing stuff and keeping a rollback stable point, So when I end up validating and app I add it to the stable snapshot rollback point.

@bester69: Thank you. This is new learning for this debian newbie and it is very interesting. I wonder, however, if it might be overkill for an amateur home hobby system?

Alternatives in Repository:
Déjà Dup
Backintime
Restic

Alternative, not in Repository, but with .deb version
Duplicati

Look at https://dflinux.frama.io/thebeginnersha ... 09-backup/

Thank you. Backintime is not in the debian-testing repo. Do you have any recommendation as between deja-dup and restic?

Do others perhaps have opinions or recommendations between the two? Thank you.

@arochester: BTW, thanks for the link to the Beginners Handbook. I was unaware of it and it looks like required reading for me :)

ok,
Then I would go for a deduplication backup tool.:
In my experience the best data backup tools are: rsync, duplicity and attic

- Déjà Dup is a very trusted tool, its a great bakup tool, and its a duplicity's GUI, but i find it litle flexible, I think you cant restore simple files by using the graphical interface.

I highly recommend you attic,

https://attic-backup.org/
Its very easy to use and configure and you can restore historical files from days to months/years ago.

Its very easy to use,see.:
Step 0. : Creation repository backup
attic init ~/myfolderbackup

Step 1.: Run backup
attic create -v ~/myfolderbackup::myBackup-`date +%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M:%S` ~/MyVídeos ~/MyImages

Step 2.: Lista Backups
attic list ~/myfolderbackup

Step 3.: Restore Backup
attic restore ~/myfolderbackup::myBackup-date-06032013 /home/myuser/MyImages
--------------------------------------------
Here I let you my daily data backup script, Its running linking the script to /etc/cron.daily;

>>It gives you a 6 months , 4 weeks and 7 days retention backups<<

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
ionice -c2 -n7 -p$$
renice +15 -p $$
###
DEDUP=/home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/dedup/

export  ATTIC_UNKNOWN_UNENCRYPTED_REPO_ACCESS_IS_OK=yes
attic create --stats -v                           \
    $DEDUP::hostname-`date +%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M:%S`      \
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/PDF\ linux/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/PDF\ docs/		\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/Accesos/		\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/scripts/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/Youtubes/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/LIBROS_ONENOTE/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/MONDOTRANS/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/BUSSINESS/	\
    /home/myuser/LINUXDEBS/TRABAJO/	\
    /media/sda5/MegaSync/Dropbox/domina/SEGUROUT/	\
    /media/sda5/MegaSync/SEGURCRYP/	\
    /media/sda5/MegaSync/Dropbox/domina/MIOS/teacher/	\
    --exclude /home/Ben/Music/Justin\ Bieber    \
    --exclude '*.pyc'

# Use the `prune` subcommand to maintain 7 daily, 4 weekly
# and 6 monthly archives.
attic prune -v $DEDUP --keep-daily=7 --keep-weekly=4 --keep-monthly=6

And here you can see all my databackups retentions:
attic list dedup

@bester69: Thank you for the detailed info. Attic does not appear to be in the debian-testing repo. However, when I was researching it, I discovered that (a) Attic has been forked to BorgBackup, which is in the debian-testing repo; and (b) Attic is no longer under active development but Borg is.

Do you know Borg? Any comments about it? It seems to have good documentation (terminal and online) to hand hold a newcomer through installation, setup and basic operation.

DejaDup is Gnome which, for philosophical reasons, I avoid.

Yeah, Ive seen attic is being discontinued and forked to borg, they are more or less the same (I guess they use most of same command parameters) (borg is already better), I will use it eventually.. but, for now, i cant, the backups are not compatible..

You also have restic (another fork), Its suppose to be more simple, and with some few more backends I think.
https://github.com/restic/restic
--------------------------
I love theses three backup tools: fsarchiver, duplicty and attic(borg)
- attic (borg) and duplicity are the ultimate data backtop tools
- fsarchiver for full system backup (I love fsarchiver, you can backup the whole compressed system in another partition while you keep working)

Full System Backup in the Cloud.:
See.:
Step 0.- Backing my system installation in another partition (I exclude Home folder to save space)

Code: Select all

sudo fsarchiver savefs -Av -s 2400 -z 2 /media/sda6/systemBACKUP/backup.fsa /dev/sda2 \ --exclude=/home
>>It backups the system in compressed 2.4Gb size files; in my case my whole backed sytem was 7.1Gb.

Step 1. Uploading the fsarchiver backup to the cloud (account of BOX , 10Gb for free).(7.1 < 10Gb):
Box: Secure File Sharing, Storage, and Collaboration
https://www.box.com

- Using duplicity with webdav to connect to Box.:

Code: Select all

duplicity  -v 4  --progress --allow-source-mismatch  --num-retries=5 --no-encryption --ssl-no-check-certificate --volsize 100   --verbosity=6 --timeout=60 --progress  /media/sda6/systemBackup/ webdavs://xxxxxx@yahoo.es:"$Password"@dav.box.com/dav/sysbackup
And It's taking me around 10 or 20 hours (depending on your bandwith speed) upload the 7.1Gb. The good thing about duplicity, is that you can suspend or interrupt the backup without any corruption... So you dont have to worry about the uploading process, you can complete the upload in two or three days while you make a normal use of your computer.
