Debian with MATE is how you define a desktop OS.
Prove me wrong. What's that? You can't.

Does MATE offer a Wayland option yet?

Mate is nice, however, I am still partial to Xfce.

BTW, Wayland is still in the baby phase and not ready, X is nowhere near dead and will still be here for at least 10 more years (probably longer), there is even XWayland for transition purposes.

Gee whiz, "what is with this invasion of trolls ?"
The thing of it is , this is just your opinion, and every body has one . Nothing to prove or disprove, it is only opinions. I like XFCE better and so that is how I define my Desktop OS, probably others prefer something else, maybe KDE, ? As far as X being dead, I don't think so, it is still living and kicking on my system, has been for years and will be for years in the future. Hey guys, there is a new party, jump in and "Can you prove me wrong ?" As far as OS goes, I define it as Devuan, without the systemd and XFCE as the DE.

It's Off Topic, just relax a bit. I know it's hard to believe since most of the time we're so damn serious, but fun can be had here [albeit piecemeal].

With Gnome 3, after a few times, I feel productive. No clutter. Yes, I liked Gnome 2 earlier. Mate looks rather, ordinary. Gnome 3 may be buggy, but it is working fine, at least for my systems. (The users are not sysadmins and developers)

i'm sure, Gnome dev's have removed the ability to do anything else. By Gnome 4.15.18 it will be the equivalent to this:

Lysander >> It's Off Topic, just relax a bit.
Very observent of you, to notice it is in "off topic" board. Now, you should relax, come on in, your welcome and enjoy the party. Me ? "What, me worry ?"
Never happens, it is all one big circus from my view, nothing is serious,..
are you serious ? As far as Gnome goes, and Mate, I read some where that Mate is just a extension of Gnome, or started out that way,---
from:https://renewablepcs.wordpress.com/abou ... e-or-xfce/ MATE
A fork of GNOME 2.x, MATE looks and acts just like the traditional GNOME 2.x shell which was replaced with the release of GNOME 3.x. As shown in the screenshot above, MATE is essentially a return to the much loved desktop found in older versions of Linux. While using MATE in Linux Mint, I felt very much at home with the desktop,

Sounds great, "The more the merrier" that's what I all ways say, so enjoy the show.

It's more likely than you think.

X is dead...
That would be my main and the only issue with MATE. On the other hand, MATE 1.20 has some mention of Wayland in it's release notes:
https://mate-desktop.org/blog/2018-02-0 ... -released/
Wayland support won't be ready in time for Buster, but for Bullseye it should be. MATE has also gained a lot of popularity not only thanks to Mint, but to Ubuntu's great MATE flavor (you have to give them credit for that). It's perfect for Windows refugees.
X is not dead, it's not even half-dead. The last recent release has even added new features, some truthfully related to XWayland.

Gee, I see someone has missed the whacky tone in my opening post. Oh well, you can't have fun and expect a serious discussion at the same time. Or can you? Mind you, this barely is a serious discussion, else I would have posted it in the appropriate subforum. This is just my sign of appreciation for MATE.

It became too slow for me, and once I fired up and configured MATE (which is child's play, anyone can use MATE, even total newbies), I saw how much GNOME sucked out of my system. And it is a mid-range laptop.

I like catfish and tuna more. They aren't perfect, but they fill me up :D
