Audio stopped working after apt dist-upgrade to Debian 9.5

#1 Post by Jthomas »

Hello all. I've been using debian stable as a daily driver for the past 2-3 months. Yesterday morning everything was working fine. Then I decided to update to 9.5 from 9.4 as well as install the spotify client. Soon after I realized the audio stopped. I was unsure whether it was the upgrade or spotify, so I spent a few hours trying to figure it out with no luck. I was getting frustrated so i ended up doing a reinstall of 9.5 to see if it would help and I'm still stuck without sound.

Previously to my audio issues I was using i3 wm and alsa to manage the sound. After the reinstall, I tried installing pulseaudio/pavucontrol to help debugging the issue and I still can't seem to get any audio. i also installed a dedicated sound card I hand around and could not get any audio from that either. Finally the only device I was able to get sound from my computer as by connecting usb headphones and they worked without an issue.

I do not have timidity or it's daemon installed. I have set flat audio off in pulse audio.

I have indeed played around with alsamixer trying to regain audio. I have also tried through vlc to output to the specific device with no luck. No matter what devices I've tried, I cannot hear anything from speaker-test either.

I apologize for not having my apt logs, I did not realize how useful they may be until after I reinstalled.

I'm completely baffled as to what the problem is.. Any help would be most appreciated. I am dedicated to fixing this and continuing my debian journey.

It's really going to be tough for people to help until you decide which hardware you are going to use, and which sound configuration, alsa or pulseaudio? It's really not clear from all thoe output exactly what the machine has in it, and what you have installed on it.

When something breaks on an upgrade, the last thing I would do is throw more hardware at it, or try installing a bunch of stuff blindly. The first thing I do in that case is check logs/dmesg for errors.

If alsa failed me after any upgrade or reboot, I'd try
# alsactl init

Then I'd check the mixer for anything muted, then I'd try the speaker-test.

Once that setup is working, moving from that to pulseaudio should be easy, but I don't use it so can't help with that.

Take your time and stick with one hardware setup, get alsa working first, then decide on pulseaudio?

Good luck.

I understand where you are coming from and I appreciate your response. I will be reinstalling 9.4 to see if I can get my original setup working with the onboard sound (realtek) and alsa. If that works I will proceed with upgrading and replicating the issue and update my post accordingly. I apologize for the confusion with additional software and hardware. In hindsight I realize it made it far more difficult to debug, but I was so desperate to get sound working I just wanted to try every possible thing. I will take it slow and get to the bottom of this. :)
