[solved] nvidia drivers have been kept back

#1 Post by obaino »

I am using Debian stretch 9.5 xfce / kernel 4.9.0-7-amd64
this is inxi -G

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050]
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: nvidia Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 375.82
on apt upgrade I get this:

Code: Select all

The following packages have been kept back:
  libcuda1 libcuda1:i386 libegl-nvidia0 libegl1-glvnd-nvidia libgl1-nvidia-glx
  libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 libgles-nvidia1 libgles-nvidia2 libgles1-glvnd-nvidia
  libgles2-glvnd-nvidia libglx-nvidia0 libglx0-glvnd-nvidia libnvidia-cfg1 libnvidia-compiler
  libnvidia-eglcore libnvidia-fatbinaryloader libnvidia-fatbinaryloader:i386 libnvidia-glcore
  libnvidia-glcore:i386 libnvidia-ml1 libopengl0-glvnd-nvidia nvidia-alternative nvidia-driver
  nvidia-driver-bin nvidia-driver-libs nvidia-egl-icd nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-kernel-support
  nvidia-opencl-icd nvidia-smi nvidia-vdpau-driver xserver-xorg-video-nvidia
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
I tried to figure out what happens if I proceed with upgrade through synaptic and it looks like it will uninstall many parts of my system so I am really concerned about it.
running

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --with-new-pkgs upgrade
as is suggested here hasn't installed anything either.
What would you suggest to do? I would like to have the updated nvidia drivers but I don't want to risk breaking my system.

Thank you in advance for any help

Thank you for your reply.

This is what I get:

Where did you get the kernel 4.9.0-7-amd64? I'm showing 4.9.0-6-amd64. I don't know whether or not the kernel is an issue but you might try the older one.

For info only, my latest update on July 21 installed kernel 4.9.0-7-amd64.

That's curious. I ran apt update && apt upgrade today and it says 0 upgrades available. I still have 4.9.0-6-amd64.

Seems 375 was replaced in stable by 384 for spectre/meltdown mitigation reasons.
Given the array of multilib nvidia packages shown in OP’s post, it’s possibly some package depending on a 375 package explicitly - aptitude might be the tool to unravel it.

... assuming it’s a clean Debian system, which i’m not convinced of yet - unadulterated stable tends to work without issue in most cases.

apt-cache depends nvidia-driver:

Code: Select all

nvidia-driver

  PreDepends: nvidia-legacy-check
    nvidia-legacy-check:i386

  Depends: nvidia-driver-libs-nonglvnd
  Depends: nvidia-driver-bin
  Depends: xserver-xorg-video-nvidia
  Depends: nvidia-vdpau-driver
  Depends: nvidia-alternative
    nvidia-alternative:i386
 |Depends: nvidia-kernel-dkms
    nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386
  Depends: <nvidia-kernel-384.130>
    nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386
    nvidia-kernel-dkms
  Depends: nvidia-support
    nvidia-support:i386
  Breaks: <nvidia-glx>
  Recommends: nvidia-settings
  Recommends: nvidia-persistenced
    nvidia-persistenced:i386
 |Suggests: nvidia-kernel-dkms
    nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386
  Suggests: nvidia-kernel-source
  Replaces: <nvidia-glx>
so this means that if I update the nvidia driver I'll break nvidia-glx?

Also, when I'm doing sudo apt upgrade nvidia-driver
i get:

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 nvidia-driver : Depends: nvidia-driver-libs (= 384.130-1) but 375.82-1~deb9u1 is to be installed or
nvidia-driver-libs-nonglvnd (= 384.130-1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: nvidia-driver-bin (= 384.130-1) but 375.82-1~deb9u1 is to be installed
Depends: xserver-xorg-video-nvidia (= 384.130-1) but 375.82-1~deb9u1 is to be installed
Depends: nvidia-vdpau-driver (= 384.130-1) but 375.82-1~deb9u1 is to be installed
                 Depends: nvidia-alternative (= 384.130-1)
E: Broken packages
what would be the recommended course of action?

Have you done an ‘apt update’?
The 375 version no longer exists in the stable repo.

As said before, aptitude has a better resolver and the ncurses interface would be my choice to investigate the issue and options.

4.9.0-7 is the latest Stretch kernel. dist-upgrade may be necessary to get it.

Nope, Synaptic upgraded my kernel just using the "reload" and "mark upgrades" buttons. No dist-upgrade needed. Happened July 14 for me.

Firstly I updated my system with version 384.130 I mentioned in my earlier posts.
Steam broke, it wouldn't launch due to missing files...

Finally updated nvidia driver using backports.
Now I'm having version 390.67 and everything is working fine.

Thank you all for your valuable input.

oh your mention of steam

and i see you are multilib

oh this will be your life

install apt-listbugs. then hold your nvidia packages. and check every now and again if they have been updated.
