[solved] Backports kernel 4.17 not working

#1 Post by cronoik »

Hi,

I'm running stretch on a Dell Inspiron 15 5575 and tried the kernel from the stretch backports but the system isn't able to boot. Should I create a bug report or can I fix it on my side?

Thank you for the hint. I have removed virtualbox temporarily but I'm still not able to boot. The last line I see on the display is line 653:

Code: Select all

Aug 5 12:39:04 debian kernel: [ 13.598429] fb: switching to amdgpudrmfb from EFI VGA

do you think the failure to load firmware for amdgpu might have something to do with it?

I'm not sure and too unexperienced to answer that question properly, but I would say no. I have installed firmware-linux-nonfree from the backports and I'm able to boot with the stretch kernel (4.9), but not with backports kernel (4.17). Therefore I think it isn't be related to the missing firmware.

I might try this one with the later kernel, the backports ver is pretty old.

Don't add testing to sources if you want to try it, just download it and install with apt.

the description page says it includes these:
* "Raven" ASD firmware (amdgpu/raven_asd.bin)
* "Raven" CE firmware (amdgpu/raven_ce.bin)
* "Raven" GPU info (amdgpu/raven_gpu_info.bin)
* "Raven" ME firmware (amdgpu/raven_me.bin)
* "Raven" MEC firmware (amdgpu/raven_mec.bin)
* "Raven" MEC2 firmware (amdgpu/raven_mec2.bin)
* "Raven" PFP firmware (amdgpu/raven_pfp.bin)
* "Raven" RLC firmware (amdgpu/raven_rlc.bin)
* "Raven" SDMA firmware (amdgpu/raven_sdma.bin)
* "Raven" VCN firmware (amdgpu/raven_vcn.bin)

Hopefully those new firmware packages will be added to stretch-backports shortly.
