Is there a way around this? Or do I have to install a newer firefox? I’m using firefox ESR 52.9.0 (64-bit) On debian stable. This add-on requires a newer version of Firefox (at least version 61.0). You are using Firefox 52.0.

add-on blocked by mozilla firefox esr
I downloaded addons months ago, when debian 9 came out with no problem. I just did a clean install of debian 9, and now I get this message from mozilla.

Many add-ons have a Version History link with older versions that esr will install.

There is no way around this. The way add-ons are implemented was changed in Firefox 57 (?) to the new WebExtensions API. For FF ESR, you just need to search add-ons to find old versions.
For current Firefox, some extension developers have ported their old extensions to the new API. Others have been discontinued and there are several old favourites for which I have not found replacements with equivalent function.

I don't see the Version History link on the add-on page. May have been removed by Mozilla?4D696B65 wrote:Many add-ons have a Version History link with older versions that esr will install.

I was wondering if there is a safe place to get them.
If not i'll upgrade firefox, or just use the add-on that still work.

Thanks. I really wanted a script blocker. Too many web pages have too many scripts.

Just a thought here, but how are you copying, what command ?Some link or something gets broken when copying to a usb stick.
If it is just copy/paste, or 'cp', 'rsync' might solve that problem.

noscript is a script blocker.manny6 wrote:Thanks. I really wanted a script blocker. Too many web pages have too many scripts.
Re: add-on blocked by mozilla firefox esr
The xul-ext version of NoScript is not identical to the 'old' NoScript for previous Firefox versions.
I switched to ScriptSafe: it works more like the 'old' NoScript.

2 Comments on the FF add-ons
Some of the more popular add-ons have been made into debian packages and would be subject to Debian security policy.
There are some add-on that are not secure or frankly are malware. In recognition of that, the project encourages add-on from Debian.

Specific care about extensions API for firefox releases:
Buster: firefox-esr_52.9.0esr => XUL extension API (not maintained anymore)
SID: firefox-esr_60.1.0esr => Web extension API
Example: umatrix extension is no more available in XUL version (the reason why I've switched to Web extension API).
