no sound device and kde can't use nvidia driver after update

#1 Post by oxygene »

after 2-3 mounts i finally decided to update my buster, but after that my alc1150 has disappeared from output devices.
aplay -l shows the device but aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav gives nothing.
also kde doesn't use nvidia-driver even though it's installed and working, it uses vmware inc instead. tried purging and reinstalling it but nothing changed.
the point about audio is that it disappeared during update, before restarting.
also tried updating initramfs just in case it was that mismatching kernel thing but didn't help.

Are you running Buster in a VMWare virtual machine?

you may not believe it but I encounter a lot of problems every time I update debian. I used to fix them one by one every time, but this time I couldn't fix it by myself.
to be honest, if it wasn't for my pride I would have migrated to ubuntu or mint a long time ago.
PS: I think it's important to mention that if I use HDMI sound, it shows up and actually works, it's just realtek device which is missing.

there's a proverb somewhere about pride, foolishness, and suffering.
anyhow, you left out the most obvious choice: debian stable.

buster on asus z-170 deluxe with i5-6600k overclocked cpu 16g of ddr4 and nvidia gtx960-4g also overclocked there are 2 4t wd hdds one is black and the other is red-pro but the boot device is a corsair neutron ssd with triple boot windows10enterprise (I had to clean install it about 2 months ago) macos-highsierra(again needed to be clean installed by unibeast about 4 months ago) and finally debian buster which has been there for about 18 months (and that's actually because I decided to leave jessie behind back then and that's another story) there's been lots of problems of course but I always managed to fix them some how, but this time it seems I need to give up.

Re: no sound device and kde can't use nvidia driver after up

I installed vmware last year to test mac-os-x86 and make installation usb by unibeast and there's never been such problems since then, but i will remove it just to see if that would help.
the most annoying part of the sound problem is that there's not even one similar problem on the web on any distro, aplay -l shows the device but nothing can be heard when i use the device by alsa. of course I always had problems with alsa back in the days when I used jessie sometimes audio was just gone for absolutely no reason and it would fix automatically by itself, so I'm not worried about that, the problem is with gstreamer (I think) hdmi sound works just fine but alc won't show up at all, and it's not jack problem since digital audio is supposed to show up anyway, but it won't.

That is weird that you have "unknown" for gpu type. You say nvidia is installed correctly and working, but if it's not working, then why do you say it is installed correctly?

Yeah I believe it, testing is a real PITA from what I have read. People still run it, and refuse to use stable+backports for some reason...

On the ALSA thing, I am prety sure there are one or two threads about no sound on the forum here.

I've already done that another way, I created a new user to see if there's a problem with config files. however I did what you suggested and got the same result.
bw123 wrote:That is weird that you have "unknown" for gpu type. You say nvidia is installed correctly and working, but if it's not working, then why do you say it is installed correctly?
because when I run lsmod | grep nvidia I get this:

Code: Select all

nvidia_drm 45056 1
drm_kms_helper 196608 1 nvidia_drm
drm 471040 4 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm
nvidia_modeset 1110016 2 nvidia_drm
nvidia 14397440 73 nvidia_modeset
ipmi_msghandler 65536 2 ipmi_devintf,nvidia
also games would run flawlessly. besides nouveau driver usually doesn't work for me and if nvidia was not activated I had to disable nouveau in grub, but it's activated it's just kde that doesn't use it. but you gave me an idea I'm gonna see if another dm works or not.

I was right it's sddm. when i use lightdm I can run compiz on mate, however if I log into plasma or try to run kwin on mate while using lightdm I get the following error:

Code: Select all

** (lightdm:4772) : WARNING **: 19:09:26:216: Error updating user /org/freedesktop/Accounts/User1001: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: No such interface ?org.freedesktop.DisplayManager.AccountService?
repeated with different numbers.
And about the sound problem it would be great if you give me the link to the topic. I've seen many topics related to sound problem but non of them was exactly like this, the alc device can be seen in aplay -l, but I can't hear the sound, and on gstreame it doesn't show up at all.
Update: I just realized I have to kill the dm and launch it again. and it doesn't matter what dm it is. doing so makes alsa work, and I can run compiz, but plasma desktop or kwin wont work.

I finally managed to fix the dm problem and alsa works and composite managers recognize my nvidia (they didn't before neither kwin nor compiz), but KDE and pulseaudio are still broken and I have to use mate or some other desktop (if they work) I give up. I'm pretty sure even if I fix it somehow some other problems will show up. It doesn't worth it, so I'm going for a clean install. Since nothing has been solved here, feel free to close the topic or delete it if you want.
