Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Hi,
I'm unable to boot after a fresh install of 9.5.0, either the non official firmware or regular 9.5.0 -
After installation, it boots to
[Firmware Bug]: cpu 0, invalid threshold interrupt offset 1 for bank 4, block 0
and hangs.
System is a HP laptop, AMD graphics, AMD processor.
I've installed multiple times, wiped drive each time.
I've googled and looked through this forum, best solution (only?) solution I've seen is to edit the grub startup and add noapic . I did that, still the same.
Any suggestions on what else to try?
Thanks!

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Update - I left the system on, and maybe 20 minutes later, it went past it and now says
Gave up waiting for suspend/resume device
Gage up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Missing modules (can /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! UUID=9Dc15a48-f808-4ceb-99fa-e6f0f28589e5 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
(initramfs) shell
Do I have a bad install? Start over?

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
UUID=9Dc15a48-f808-4ceb-99fa-e6f0f28589e5 is a drive. It's not being recognized. On an older machine I'd check my BIOS to see if a drive is hidden.
What file system are you using?
Have you tried a live-CD (or USB)?

Sorry guess I shouldn't say 'older'... it's less than a year old LOL.. Drive isn't hidden. I've installed a few other distros with no problem.Bulkley wrote:UUID=9Dc15a48-f808-4ceb-99fa-e6f0f28589e5 is a drive. It's not being recognized. Ok, so on the live boot I'm not seeing a option to run, only a option to install? I'm using UEFI for the BIOS, GPT for the boot stick if that matters?
Just installed again.
tried with and without LVM, went with the defaults - guided, format drive, use entire drive, continous space.
Now when I boot, I get
Firmware bug cpu 0, invalid threshold interrupt offset 1 for bank 4, block 0.
Warning failed to connect to lvmetad, falling back to device scanning.
Warning failed to connect to lvmetad falling back to device scanning
/devmappergp--vg-root: clean, 322344/6758400 files, 2208504/27009024 blocks
and then a few lines of iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: firmware: failed to load lwlwifi-7265D-XX.ucode (-2).
I did also try with the non commercial ISO....

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Buster:
Same cpu 0 invalid threshold message.
then
cgroup: cgroup2: unknown option "nsdelegate"
sp5100_tco: i/o address 0x0cd6 already in use
Suggestions: modprobe.blacklist=sp5100_tco on boot
Added that. Back to the iwlwifi failed to load iwlwifi.ucode errors
I'll try not loading those, but fear I won't have wifi.

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Did you get the wi-fi firmware messages even with the newer firmware-iwlwifi in Buster?
There's also a known issue where those might be benign messages: the driver is just going down a list of possible files it can use until it finds the one that Debian installs.

Yep, tried buster with and without adding the non free drivers. Same messages, and it just hangs. I've let it go 30+ minutes, stuck on the failed to load iwlwifi..stevepusser wrote:Did you get the wi-fi firmware messages even with the newer firmware-iwlwifi in Buster?

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
So apparently I had an older 10.0. Downloaded the latest 10. (.3?) .. Installed, and rebooted to
[ OK ] Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes.
And sat there. Found an article saying
20:
Press Alt+F2 to switch to a new console
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel then reboot
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, remove any present code (if applicable) and enter the following:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection
So I ran the purge, rebooted, ran the install... But I don't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf .. Created file with the above text.
Now system boots to saying something unsupported AMD (flashes very quickly), then sits at a blinking cursor...

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Well, if you don't have Intel graphics, those instructions force the system to try and use Intel graphics...so I wouldn't think that a broken GUI should be any surprise.phirephoto wrote:So apparently I had an older 10.0. Downloaded the latest 10. (.3?) .. Installed, and rebooted to

Do you have Windows on the machine still? Can you download an ISO of Ubuntu or MX Linux and see if you can get a Live session of those running on your machine? What I'd like to see is a nice readout of your hardware. There's a good tool for that called inxi (must be installed on Ubuntu, AFAIK), and the results of "inxi -F" as a standard user can help us a lot.

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Yeah - don't have Intel graphics that's why I HOPED that removing the intel package would fix it, but it didn't, and neither did reinstalling it (I figured you could have the package even without Intel graphics?)stevepusser wrote:Well, if you don't have Intel graphics, those instructions force the system to try and use Intel graphics...so I wouldn't think that a broken GUI should be any surprise.phirephoto wrote:So apparently I had an older 10.0. I don't have dual boot, I wiped the drive. I've gotten a few other distros to run on the machine. I can also get to a terminal on the machine with Alt-F2 if that helps?

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
If you can login in that terminal and install inxi, you could run that command, but it's more of a pain to copypaste the output to here. You could direct the output to a file and somehow copypaste the contents, or just upload a photo of the ouput, but running a Live session with a GUI makes it easier for many users.
Xorg scans the hardware and loads the correct drivers automatically without an xorg.conf file, but the one you added tells it to use the intel driver instead, whether Intel hardware is present or not.

Re: Unable to boot 9.5.0-amd64
Since you can get to tty then I'd disagree that the machine is unable to boot, the place I'd look next is "Unable to run display manager," or "Black screen in display manager."
Since the freeze for testing (Buster) is coming in a few months, https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-a ... 00004.html I wouldn't use it unless you want a lot of headaches. There will probably be a lot of pkgs changed/introduced before the freeze. IIRC it can be a very difficult time. I usually try testing after the hard freeze, most of the worst bugs are gone by then.

Hmmm...this doesn't seem to be Debian with that kernel version, unless it's a pretty old version of Buster. Could you let us know what it is?phirephoto wrote:Inxi:
