debian 4.0 iso dvd?

#1 Post by hthi »

I want to install debian 4. I found this iso
http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/debian/deb ... 64/iso-cd/
I would prefer a dvd iso but I cannot find one.

If I burn the cd debian 4 iso on an usb memory stick and boot it then I get the message unknown file system. Can
I get the dvd debian 4 iso?

Can I install debian 4?

Is debian 4 free software?
I want to connect an usb device and find out if there is a free driver for the device. Thank you.

First, it is very unlikely Debian 4 ISO is ready to use from USB, so the first question is: did you try and run isohybrid on it?
Second (curious). You realize it will not run on modern hardware? Do you have a 20 year old computer for it? Or you run it in a VM?

Debian 4 is free software, like any other Debian version, but it is very very obsolete. The current stable version is 9.
Why do you want to install such an old version ?
cd-image archives do not keep DVD images (would take too much space), but they might be rebuilt using Jigdo and the Debian package archive. Check http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/debian/deb ... jigdo-dvd/ , http://archive.debian.org/ and look for information about how using Jigdo.
But it won't boot natively from a USB memory stick.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/arch ... jigdo-dvd/
Yes, the OP will need to use jigdo, to build the image.

There is some info here:
https://www.debian.org/releases/etch/debian-installer/
Errata for release 4.0r0
Disk devices may change on reboot
On systems with multiple disk controllers, the kernel/udev may assign a different device node on reboot of the system than was used during installation due to difference in load order of drivers.
This can lead to failure to boot the system. In most cases this can be corrected by changing the bootloader configuration and /etc/fstab, possibly using the rescue mode of the installer.
Note however that this problem may occur again on subsequent boots. Fixing this issue has priority for the next release of Debian installer.
If the OP will not provide better details, there is not much anyone can do to help:
If I burn the cd debian 4 iso on an usb memory stick and boot it then I get the message unknown file system.
Well that is nice, but without knowing how you put the ISO on the usb stick, it is any bodies guess, also how you prepared the usb stick ?

The link provided is to netinstall ISO. Netinstall of Debian 4 will definitely not work.

I see, that now, sorry, did not notice before, any way the OP should be able to find the one they want, there is another here :
It says "business card", and I am not really sure what that is :
It is a ISO though, and does not require jgdo :
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/arch ... sscard.iso

There also, is this:https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/arch ... 64/iso-cd/
But it is CD, and the OP said they want DVD, even though these are a small images, I don't see why a DVD is needed.

Hmm, thanks, I have 1 working ISO for Debian 2, but just the base, no Xwindows or anything.

For what ever it's worth I tried the amd64/iso-cd/debian-40r9-amd64-businesscard.iso , on a QEMU VM, and it did not work , couldn't install, it did boot though.

Down the memory lane, eh? I remember having my mail server running on Potato. Wasn't my first Debian, though. Can't recall the version of my first Debian.

I have an usb device which will not work on debian 9 64bit main if I do not
install a non free software firmware.

One wrote the usb device worked on debian 3. If debian 3 was free
software then there was free software firmware at some point.

If debian 4 is the first x86 64 bit version of debian then I wanted
to install debian 4. Connect the usb device and get to know
if it would work. If it would work I would ask if I can install the
usb device's debian 4 free software firmware on debian 9 64bit
main.

I thought all former debian dvd isos would be available for
download. But they are not.

If I have to make the debian 4 dvd iso myself it gets complicated.

Back then firmware was not required. Nowadays hardware manufacturers are cheap and instead of using NVRAM they use loadable firmware.
Running such an old OS is hardly a solution. BTW, have you looked up when SATA was invented and added to Linux kernel?

(Furthermore, Linux kernel developers never add support for future hardware. Morons, aren't they? For instance, as of today there is no support in the Linux kernel for say, year 2028 hardware!)

What USB device ? What non free firmware ? Why don't you just install that firmware ?

Back then, many firmware blobs were embedded into the kernel. Then they were extracted and packaged separately.

Oh come on now. There is firmware shipped with kernel nowadays, too. I remember downloading the kernel sources, the tarball was 12 MB. How much firmware you can fit into this tarball in addition to kernel sources?

Edit: I just checked, there was no firmware shipped with kernel 2.0 and 2.2.

What USB device ?
Mustek bearpaw 1200cu plus.
What non free firmware ?

Why don't you just install that firmware ?
Because it is non free software.

I see. This firmware is used by sane-backend (part of SANE), not by the kernel.
What's wrong with it being non free ? In any case it is uploaded to the device, not executed by the host. This is not much different from a firmware embedded into the device.

You can use, share, modify and redistribute free software.

Oldest debian version I was able to install was debian 6. The usb device did not work. Probably there has not been a version
of debian which did not require non free software for the usb device.

worked way back then in kernel
A person wrote the usb device ran on debian 3. Then stopped running. Maybe it only worked because he had
installed non free firmware.
And stopped running for other reasons.
works now in non-free
Yes.
