video workon vlc if opened in brower but not in file manager

#1 Post by DRAGSTER_TUNER »

Hi everyone!

Im having a weird problem with vlc...

If i download a video in browser (vivaldi), and open this file by clicking on it, in the download label of the browser, the video opens in the vlc with no issue...

butttt

If i try open the video by clicking on it, in the file manager (thunar), the vlc simply freezes! Just the cursor still working...all the rest of the X hangs and i have to reboot the computer.

So, i cant even open the vlc in terminal to try figure out whats going on...

Even being a debian fresh install, i try delete the .config and .cache vlc folders to restore defaults.....but it does not solved the problem.

Any clue?

if you right-click on the file, what comes up as the default action (it's under Properties iirc)?

and it's the exact same file that opens nicely from the browser? and how does that work? do you have an addon that opens video links in your media player? or odes it download them first?

Sorry for delay...

"if you right-click on the file, what comes up as the default action (it's under Properties iirc)?"

The default option is the default media player, called mpv.

"and it's the exact same file that opens nicely from the browser?"

Yes

"and how does that work? do you have an addon that opens video links in your media player?"

I gues so, because the video plays in the window of the browser itself

"or odes it download them first?"

this option appears if i try to open it on the firefox....but how i uses vivaldi, it opens in itself

there's something missing here.
i don't get the connection between online video in the browser's html5 player and downloaded videos in your media player.
please walk us through a complete example, i.e. esp. the link to a web page that offers to watch videos online & also download them.

That mp4 plays fine here with both vlc and mpv. How can you have a fresh debian install and have vivaldi?
https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... ection=all

Did you change your sources.list to some third party site to get vivaldi browser or another vlc version?

Code: Select all

I don't have any problem playing it on VLC, after downloading it either.
It also plays ok in my browser.

same here.
all conceivable possibilties work.

maybe your problem is vivaldi-specific.
maybe vivaldi is missing some plugins for multimedia playback?
it is chromium based, so solutions for chromium should apply.

"Did you change your sources.list to some third party site to get vivaldi browser or another vlc version?"

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.c3sl.ufpr.br/debian-multimedia testing main
deb-src http://debian.c3sl.ufpr.br/debian-multimedia testing main
deb http://repo.vivaldi.com/archive/deb/ stable main

"maybe your problem is vivaldi-specific.

But the problem is NOT in vivaldi, it plays falwlesly the videos....the problem is when i try play any video in VLC by clicking on it in the THUNAR file manager or opening the video in vlc by command line.

It's okay to be confused, but saying you have fresh debian install with that sources.list was really bad. That can't happen unless you do it to yourself.

If you look at apt policy that might help you understand, or look up the words repo+parade on the forum here.

in other words, you are using testing.
you should be able to properly troubleshoot such problems.

i recommend you reinstall, a real debian stable this time.

i also don't know how vivladi's "stable" repo relates to debian testing.
no knowing what it might break / pull in.

The best and quickest and easiest solution is probably what debiman said above. That thread you linked is like 30 yrs old or something. It had the same suggestion in it for fixing the problem. Reinstall.

Everybody wants to help, but if you run 3rd party repos, nobody will want to spend time on it. It's not supported, it's not easy to fix. Even if you get it 'stable' somehow you'll never be sure about it.

The -dmo- pkg themselves aren't the only problem. Sometimes "out-of repo" pkgs can make configuration changes that can persist and cause weird problems for years, or until you find them. You can replace the bad pkg with the debian ver, but the configuration is still there without a purge of every pkg from -dmo- repo. Even after a purge, your configuration in /home remains and that adds more potential misconfiguartion.

If you want a stable system that works, use stable. Stick with stable. When you install something from outside stable, make sure you know exactly what it does, and what files it changes when you install it. Taking notes is not a bad idea.

Relevant to the thread is why you would add this http://debian.c3sl.ufpr.br/debian-multimedia to your sources.list? Why did you do this? Who told you to do it? Why did you not understand that this a 3rd party mirror for dmo that can break your debian system?

I would like to see direct links, and names. How did that get in your sources.list?
