[SOLVED]Wifi !?
[SOLVED]Wifi !?
Hello, I've installed debian two days ago, and since then I have tried a lot of different solutions found on internet to fix my issue, without results :/ .
So my problem is that I can't connect on wifi with my laptop, and I could with Windows before.
Anyone could help me ? I would be forever grateful ^^

Re: Wifi !?
The first thing is probably read these two pages in the wiki
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse
If you've already read them but they didn't help, then adding more details to your post will help other people help you. Please don;t make people drag info out of you, it makes confusing thread.

Re: Wifi !?
Looks like you need kernel 4.11 or newer:
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Realtek_RTL87 ... mbo_Module
The kernel version in stretch-backports should support it:
https://backports.debian.org/
I think you will also need the backported firmware-realtek package.

Re: Wifi !?
Hey, that Ubuntu wireless info script really helps provide information! https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info
Maybe I'll package it for MX.

Ok, Head_on_a_Stick, I did what you suggested, I still can't connect to wifi, but maybe didn't I get the right kernel (or I'm missing something obvious ).
Here is the output of the script now :

I can see the backported kernel at the top of the output but I can't be bothered scrolling to check the firmware so please post the output ofcreachei wrote:I did what you suggested

Re: Wifi !?
Do you mean "rfkill" ? it's purpose ? you could have looked it up:
https://linux.die.net/man/1/rfkill
https://linux.die.net/man/1/rfkill
Since you use "all" , it unblocked them all,...unblock index|type
Enable the device corresponding to the given index. If the device is hard-blocked, e.g. via a hardware switch, it will remain unavailable though it is now soft-unblocked.

Re: Wifi !?
So if I understand well, rfkill should have enabled my wireless device, but I can't find a proof that it is the case :/
I just tried but nothing came out.
I just tried
Code: Select all
rfkill list wifi

Re: Wifi !?
I thought you said it worked ?
There is a lot more about rfkill available:
what is the purpose of rfkill on Debian ?
One of many :
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/use ... ion/rfkill
Is that not proof enough, ?Postby creachei » 2018-10-29 14:04

Re: Wifi !?
OK maybe I talked too fast when I said "it worked", and maybe it didn't worked as expected.
I said that because i saw no error output as I used rfkill, but it seems that it did not ... worked.
I'm not sure, but I think the only device recognized as wireless (if it makes sense) is the bluetooth :

Re: Wifi !?
OK, so you have no wireless interface.
Perhaps the firmware package is too old, it is dated 2018-08-25, fwiw.

Re: Wifi !?
Find out what firmware it needs, (dmesg) and/or look up the device on the internet with the word debian or linux. ID the device like on the debian wiki and look up the device ID.

Re: Wifi !?
Compiling your own driver from source like the Ubuntu users requires you also install some other packages on Debian. Do you have a wired connection in Debian, or could get Net access with a tethered phone?
