[SOLVED]Wifi !?

#1 Post by creachei »

Hello, I've installed debian two days ago, and since then I have tried a lot of different solutions found on internet to fix my issue, without results :/ .
So my problem is that I can't connect on wifi with my laptop, and I could with Windows before.
Anyone could help me ? I would be forever grateful ^^

The first thing is probably read these two pages in the wiki
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

If you've already read them but they didn't help, then adding more details to your post will help other people help you. Please don;t make people drag info out of you, it makes confusing thread.

I'm sorry, I don't really know what I am doing, or what infos are useful to someone who would like to help me.
I have found someone telling to run a 'wireless_script', maybe its output can be useful :

Looks like you need kernel 4.11 or newer:

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Realtek_RTL87 ... mbo_Module

The kernel version in stretch-backports should support it:

https://backports.debian.org/

I think you will also need the backported firmware-realtek package.

Hey, that Ubuntu wireless info script really helps provide information! https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info

Maybe I'll package it for MX.

Ok, Head_on_a_Stick, I did what you suggested, I still can't connect to wifi, but maybe didn't I get the right kernel (or I'm missing something obvious :? ).
Here is the output of the script now :

Try

Code: Select all

# apt install rfkill
# rfkill unblock all
If it doesn't work then post the output of plain `rfkill`, thanks!

Do you mean "rfkill" ? it's purpose ? you could have looked it up:
https://linux.die.net/man/1/rfkill
unblock index|type
Enable the device corresponding to the given index. If the device is hard-blocked, e.g. via a hardware switch, it will remain unavailable though it is now soft-unblocked.
Since you use "all" , it unblocked them all,...

So if I understand well, rfkill should have enabled my wireless device, but I can't find a proof that it is the case :/
I just tried

Code: Select all

rfkill list wifi
but nothing came out.

I thought you said it worked ?

It worked,---snip--
Is that not proof enough, ?
There is a lot more about rfkill available:
what is the purpose of rfkill on Debian ?
One of many :

OK maybe I talked too fast when I said "it worked", and maybe it didn't worked as expected.
I said that because i saw no error output as I used rfkill, but it seems that it did not ... worked.
I'm not sure, but I think the only device recognized as wireless (if it makes sense) is the bluetooth :

Code: Select all

creachei@pc-141:~$ sudo rfkill list
0: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
and

Code: Select all

creachei@pc-141:~$ sudo rfkill
Usage:	rfkill [options] command
Options:
	--version	show version (0.5-1+b1 (Debian))
Commands:
	help
	event
	list [IDENTIFIER]
	block IDENTIFIER
	unblock IDENTIFIER
where IDENTIFIER is the index no. of an rfkill switch or one of:
<idx> all wifi wlan bluetooth uwb ultrawideband wimax wwan gps fm nfc

OK, so you have no wireless interface.

Perhaps the firmware package is too old, it is dated 2018-08-25, fwiw.

Find out what firmware it needs, (dmesg) and/or look up the device on the internet with the word debian or linux. ID the device like on the debian wiki and look up the device ID.

okay here it is from your post
RTL8723DE 802.11b/g/n PCIe Adapter [10ec:d723]

https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=linux+10ec:d723

..quick look on the page says lMr LWFinger did get it working, but it may not be in the kernel tree yet?

Compiling your own driver from source like the Ubuntu users requires you also install some other packages on Debian. Do you have a wired connection in Debian, or could get Net access with a tethered phone?
