Problem detection RAM :

#1 Post by julio13 »

8Gb installed and only 4Gb used…

configuration used:
Mother Board ASUS 960GM/U3S3 FX => 2 slot RAM max 16Gb
RAM installed 8Gb (Corsair Vengence 2x4Gb DDR3 10600 667Mz)
CPU AMD Phenon II x4 965
OS : Dual boot Windows 10 64bits / Debian 9 64bits

used test :

BIOS : view total memory 8 Gb and 4Gb/slot (not option RAM remapin)
note : flashage BIOS last version (v. 1.50) OK

memtest86+ OK : not error, 1 ram only or 2

Windows 10 : view « total mémory 8Gb but 4Gb usable »
note : the checkbox « Memory Max » as not check or check with 8 Gb max value, and nothing. The 8Gb not identified some usables

Debian 9 : view 4Gb (htop and comand free = total 4Gb) !

I do not see that there is a problem, anyone have any ideas?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problème de détection RAM : 8Gb installés et seulement 4 utilisables… Malgré mes recherches sur internet, aucune solution trouvée !

configuration utilisée :
carte mère ASUS 960GM/U3S3 FX => 2 slot RAM max 16Gb
RAM installée 8Gb (Corsair Vengence 2x4Gb DDR3 10600 667Mz)
CPU AMD Phenon II x4 965
OS : Dual boot Windows 10 64bits / Debian 9 64bits

test réalisés :

BIOS : affiche la mémoire totale 8 Gb et 4Gb /slot (pas d’option RAM remapin)
note : flashage BIOS dernière version (v. 1.50) OK

tricky.

first question: are you sure that windows sees ALL of the ram on the same machine? so it's not a hardware/BIOS problem?

next, have a good look at these search results.
there's a few things; i think we should start with the 'lshw' command from the first (unsolved) result, but please do more reading than i did.

After a quick search for https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=total+mem ... 4Gb+usable it looks to me like the number 1 answer is reseat or swap the sticks, make sure cpu is seated also.

What is the output of -

Code: Select all

dmidecode -t memory
You may have to install the dmidecode package first.

8 GiB comes from the physical RAM devices detected (firmware, dmidecode, lshw). 4 GiB comes from the usable system memory reported by the firmware to the OS.
You can check in the kernel logs and /proc/iomem how much system memory is reported, available and reserved.
How much memory does memtest86+ report ?
Could the missing memory be allocated to the graphic adapter ?

Hello,

thanks at all for your responses,

I respond late, because every attempt to answer I got a 500 error from the server.

I did all that is said in the various searches on the internet, but without success! I think it's a problem of software (OS) and not hardware, because the BIOS detects all the RAM (8GB) and Windows too, but uses only 4GB.
Under Debian9, I modified the grub config to force the kernel to use 8GB, without result.

different tests carried out: (sorry, but I ca'nt transfert screensaver, always the same mistakes of the server. impossible to add An attachmen !!!)

dmicode: 2 ranks identified 4096Mox2 , its OK

lshw -short -C memory : 8Gb Ok (4Gbx2), its OK

free -mt : total used free
mem 3948 1008 2196
swap 3715 0 3715
total 7663 1008 5911

cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal : 4042752 KB
MemFree : 1860204 KB
